Odyssée: A Journey Between Médoc and the Rhône Valley

Since the 19th century, blending wines from Médoc and the Rhône Valley has created a unique synergy, thanks to the complementary nature of their terroirs and grape varieties. This fusion of influences from the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea results in a refined and distinctive wine. It combines the tannic structure of Médoc’s great wines with the charm, finesse, and warmth of Rhône Valley wines, beautifully expressing the character of both regions in a single vintage.

The 2021 Vintage: 

2021 : Sweetness and Harmony

This vintage was marked in the vineyard by an early start and a late finish on the Atlantic and the Mediterranean sides. Despite cool climatic conditions, the final ripening was complete especially for the Cabernet Sauvignon in the Médoc area, producing deep wines, refined with a nice tautness. In the Rhône, the wines are nicely balanced and very aromatics. Grenache is juicy and crispy. Mourvèdre is straitghtforward and adds density. The result is a really synergetic blend rich and very complex. Odyssée 2021 is harmonious and shows and a nice drinkability.

Medium garnet colored, the 2021 Odyssée skips out of the glass with vivacious notes of kirsch, red currant jelly, and stewed red plums, plus suggestions of wild sage, cedar chest, and lavender. The medium-bodied palate offers vibrant red berry flavors with fine-grained tannins and just enough freshness, finishing fragrant. Odyssée is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon from the northern Médoc with Grenache from the southern Rhône. It is the creation of Pierre Graffieulle, the managing director of Eutopia Estates (including Château Montrose and Clos Rougeard) and Rhône-based winemaker Matthieu Dumarcher.

Odyssée 2021 (Vin de France; 59% Cabernet Sauvignon; 30% Grenache; 11% Mourvèdre; 13.5% alcohol; from Pierre Graffeuille and Matthieu Dumarcher). Crystalline and pure. It’s actually quite difficult to pick the components here and, tasted blind, you might imagine this as coming from somewhere like Limoux (i.e.: Rhone and Bordeaux varietals, if not quite the right ones)! Candied fruits. Candlewax. A gentle florality. Raspberry. Bramble. A little cassis with aeration. Quite strict, more so than other vintages of this wine. Not yet totally integrated. Needs time. A little dry on the finish too.

Love the aromatics on this wine, with an emphasis on cold woodsmoke, soft tar and tomato leaf, alongside blueberry and blackberry fruits, with liqourice, pomegranate and a rinse of powerful garrigue, sage and white pepper spice. A brilliant vintage for Odysee, relatively cool so ensuring juice is front and centre. Rhone-Bordeaux blend (bottled as Vin de France) from Mathieu Dumarcher and Pierre Graffeuille, first vintage 2015, 3.2ha of vines across the Médoc, Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas.
