Moulin Saint-Georges - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2013

Moulin Saint-Georges, the exclusive property of the Vauthier family

Château Moulin Saint-Georges faces Château Ausone, weaving a physical bond in addition to the family link. Located in the southern part of Saint-Émilion, a stone’s throw from the entrance to the village, this exclusive property came into the family’s possession in 1921, with the Vauthiers now representing the fifth generation. The Fongaban stream has been flowing for millennia and reminds us that Man is only passing through, passing through to enhance this vineyard sitting on a limestone slope with natural drainage thanks to this precious river. A mill, part of the Saint-Georges fiefdom, was located where the estate’s cellar now stands.

The Château Moulin-Saint-Georges vineyard covers 8 hectares in which Merlot reigns supreme, alongside a few plots of Cabernet Franc.

Even proprietor Alain Vauthier’s perfectionist/obsessive viticultural and winemaking work couldn’t pull out a gem from this small estate in the St. Emilion. He did it with Ausone, but not here. Hard acids, a rather one-dimensional, shallow mouthfeel, but decent fruit in the nose and attack, without any obvious vegetal characteristics or astringent tannins, make for a drinkable, but essentially simple, wine. Consume it over the next 4-5 years.

(80 Merlot, 20 Cabernet Franc) 85% new oak, 14000 bottles. Quite tight and austere with touches of greenness but it’s not in any way sour. The oak seems too strident and dominant att the moment for the fruit which sits in the background. The fruit is foresty and dark but perhaps too demure for the sinew and power loaded into this wine? We shall see in a few years time.

Bright black fruit, lots of concentration on the palate. Intense but not overbearing. Really tame tannins. Attractive liquorice-and-granite sort of character. Intriguing – has promise.

A vibrant, chiseled wine, the 2013 Moulin Saint-Georges graces the palate with dark blue/purplish fruit, violets, cloves, menthol and new leather. The flavors are bright, focused and beautifully articulated in a wine that will deliver considerable pleasure right out of the gate. The 2013 finishes with lovely freshness and energy. In 2013 the blend is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, all harvested between October 3 and 7. This is a terrific showing from Moulin Saint-Georges and the Vauthier family. Tasted twice.

Pure, fruit-driven nose. Good depth. Lively acidity as usual. Ageing potential.

A blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, this has a light, tertiary bouquet with a touch of wet clay. The palate is medium-bodied with a supple entry: simple lightly spiced black and red fruit with an elegant, understated finish. This is an approachable Moulin Saint Georges to drink over the next 10 years.

Tangy and fresh with dried berries and citrus fruit. Medium body with delicate tannins and a fruity finish.

This is a crisp, fresh wine, with an attractive smokiness that lends extra complexity. The tight acidity and layered tannins promise good medium-term aging.
