Moulin Saint-Georges - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2017

Moulin Saint-Georges, the exclusive property of the Vauthier family

Château Moulin Saint-Georges faces Château Ausone, weaving a physical bond in addition to the family link. Located in the southern part of Saint-Émilion, a stone’s throw from the entrance to the village, this exclusive property came into the family’s possession in 1921, with the Vauthiers now representing the fifth generation. The Fongaban stream has been flowing for millennia and reminds us that Man is only passing through, passing through to enhance this vineyard sitting on a limestone slope with natural drainage thanks to this precious river. A mill, part of the Saint-Georges fiefdom, was located where the estate’s cellar now stands.

The Château Moulin-Saint-Georges vineyard covers 8 hectares in which Merlot reigns supreme, alongside a few plots of Cabernet Franc.

Composed of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, the 2017 Moulin Saint-Georges is medium to deep garnet-purple in color and slips easily out of the glass with lively scents if Morello cherries, mulberries and black raspberries plus hints of dark chocolate, camphor, tilled soil and truffles. Medium-bodied, the palate is lively and vivacious with plenty of spritely red and black berry flavors and a soft texture, finishing with lovely purity. Drinking Window : 2020 - 2037. 91+

The 2017 Moulin Saint-Georges has turned out nicely. Plump, juicy and forward, the 2017 will drink nicely right out of the gate. Inky blue and purplish fruit, licorice, spice and floral overtones are front and center in this mid-weight, supple Saint-Émilion from the Vauthier family.

Extremely perfumed and beautiful with cherries and flowers. Hints of light chocolate. Medium to full body, firm tannins and a tangy, acidity-driven finish. Lots of tension. Exciting. Drink after 2022.

Nez discret sur les fruits rouges, linéaire dans son expression. Bouche dotée d’une vivifiante fraîcheur, élancée. Le tanin est fin, précédent une finale souple et fruitée. Joli vin de plaisir.

The 2017 Moulin Saint-Georges is gorgeous. Pliant, open-knit and seductive, the 2017 offers lovely depth in its inky blue/purplish fruit and floral notes. Silky tannins add to the wine's inviting personality. This supple, juicy Saint-Émilion from the Vauthier family will drink well upon release. Best of all, it should be a terrific value.

Kirsch, flowers, vanilla and plum notes create the perfume. On the palate, the wine is round, soft and fruity. The tannins are gentle, allowing you to focus attention on the sweet, juicy finish. 80% percent Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc create the blend.

The 2017 Moulin Saint-Georges was picked on 26 and 29 September. It has a pretty black cherry and cassis-tinged bouquet, a little tight at the moment, a tad pinched compared to previous vintages. The palate is medium-bodied with light tannin, dark berry fruit tinged with brown spices, cohesive towards the finish but it just needs to muster more complexity overall. This year, I much prefer Vauthiers’ La Clotte.

The 2017 Moulin St Georges is medium garnet-purple in color with lovely notes of red currants, black cherries, black raspberries and allspice with touches of roses and garrigue. Medium-bodied with a solid backbone of grainy tannins and wonderful freshness, it finishes long.

This has a bounce to the tannins, and again the austerity of the vintage is evident. There's no over ripeness to the fruit but there are attractive layers of soft damson and textured gooseberry and redcurrant fruits, with floral aromatics lifting everything up. 100% new oak with a low and light toast. 20% of the crop was lost to frost, with no second generation fruit used, so this vintage will see 19,000 bottles instead of a more normal 25,000.

The dark-berry and wet-earth character is pretty. Medium body, firm and silky tannins and a fresh finish. Solid acidity.
