Mondotte - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2004

The Von Neipperg Family, a history intertwined with winegrowing

The custodian of some 800 years of winegrowing tradition, the talented Stephan von Neipperg manages the Bordeaux estates acquired by his fatherin 1971: Château Canon La Gaffelière et La Mondotte, 1er Grands Crus Classés B de Saint-Emilion, Clos de l'Oratoire, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classé, Clos Marsalette, Pessac-Léognan, et le Château d'Aiguilhe, Castillon - Côte de Bordeaux

Ably assisted by a team of professionals, he has brought the wines from these châteaux to the pinnacle of quality. The upcoming generation, also deeply attached to the terroir, is preparing to perpetuate the family vocation...!

La Mondotte, the distinctive signature of an exceptional terroir.

La Mondotte's 4.5-hectares of vines grow on the clay-limestone plateau east of Saint-Emilion. This small gem of a vineyard possesses all the natural attributes of a Premier Grand Cru Classé. The terroir consists of very silty clay overlaying a rocky subsoil. This shallow, meagre soil induces excellent water regulation and is propitious to deep rooting. Fine natural drainage combined with outstanding sunshine make for early and complete ripening. The quality of La Mondotte's clay and the age of the vines (60 years on average) result in a wine that is profoundly marked by its terroir. It is silky, powerful, incomparably elegant, and has enormous minerality.

Another brilliant effort from a small, 45-year-old vineyard on the clay and limestone plateau above Pavie and Pavie Decesse, this blend of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc was cropped at 30 hectoliters per hectare. A classically structured St.-Emilion, it boasts an opaque purple color as well as a gorgeous nose of black raspberries, creme de cassis, blueberries, espresso roast, and pen ink. Huge tannin, massive body, and tremendous richness as well as depth suggest it will benefit from 4-5 years of cellaring, and should drink well for 20-25.

Full ruby-red. Reticent nose hints at black fruits and nutty oak. Densely packed and strong but a bit youthfully musclebound and currently dominated by its tannic structure. This is lush, broad and chocolatey but less sappy than it appeared to be in barrel last year. In a rather powerful style, finishing with substantial building tannins. This needs time. 90 (+?)

A concentrated nose, showing intense blackberry, vanilla and cedar, with hints of raspberry. Full-bodied, with ultrafine tannins and beautiful fruit that lasts minutes on the palate. Best after 2011.

This cuvee (from an 11+ acre vineyard planted on a clay and limestone plateau above Pavie-Decesse) performed better in January than it did last year. A blend of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc fashioned from yields of 30 hectoliters per hectare, the inky/purple-hued 2004 offers rich aromas of graphite, blueberries, blackberries, incense, and toasty oak. Dense, full-bodied, rich, and beautifully structured as well as long, it requires 4-6 years of cellaring, and should drink well for two decades.

This concentrated, powerful 2004 is more muscular and virile than most La Mondottes. Its opaque purple color is accompanied by a tight but promising nose of damp earth, blue and black fruits, flowers, licorice, and toasty new oak. Medium to full-bodied, with high tannin, it is an exceptionally fragrant, pure effort from Stephan von Neipperg that should age well for two decades. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2025.

Prolond et opulent avec un noble bouquet truffé et un tannin moins agressif et tendu que Canon la Gaffelière. Grand vin.

This is foursquare wine, with a big tannin structure, but it could use a little more depth of fruit. Full-bodied, with firm tannins and a long finish. Wait and see. I prefer the Canon-La Gaffelière right now. 80 perent Merlot and 20 percent Cabernet franc.
