Meyney - Saint-Estèphe 2019

Château Meyney, the "Virtuosity"

Since 1625, the estate has known only 4 owners in 400 years. In 2004 Crédit Agricole purchased this estate, ideally located in Saint-Estèphe, between the vines of Calon Ségur and Montrose.

In 2021, th "Virtuosity" project is launched: Contraction of 3 ideas at the heart of the estate's commitment, Green - Virtuous - Virtuoso, this project is symbolized by the launch of the conversion to Organic Farming. It also allows the recognition of many virtuous initiatives: the viti-pastoralism with the housing of 4 oxen, the planting of hedges and the installation of beehives.

I don’t know whether it’s because of the magical blue clay, Meyney 2019 opens up with plenty of floral notes, especially those elegant violet petals. This fragrance is graceful enough to soften the steel-like structure. The palate is super dense but without heaviness, accompanied by salty plum and hints of Chinese herbs lingering on the palate. From my experiences with Meyney, it will be even more gorgeous after 6-8 years of bottle aging. ??????????????,Meyney 2019?????????????????????,??????????????,??????????????????????????????,???????????????????????????????Meyney?????,??6-8????????

Notes of ripe blackcurrants and blackberries, vanilla, licorice and dark chocolate with touches of earthiness and nutmeg-like spice. Medium-bodied with ripe, velvety tannins and delicious fruit. Polished and refined. Try after 2023.

Cassis, currants, ripe tobacco, and cedar pencil notes define the bouquet of the 2019 Château Meyney, a medium to full-bodied, concentrated Saint-Estèphe that shows the elegant, moderately concentrated, yet nicely structured and balanced style of the vintage. It's already accessible with a decant but will benefit from just a handful of years in the cellar and have 15 years or more of longevity.

Aromas of sweet cherries and berries mingled with tobacco, loamy soil and petals introduce the 2019 Meyney, a medium to full-bodied, seamless and lively wine with fine depth at the core, powdery tannins and an attractive sense of completeness. This is an understated but charming Saint-Estèphe that has turned out nicely in bottle.

The 2019 Meyney is a deep, powerful wine. It shows all the richness and intensity that are such signatures, but with that added kick of vibrancy that has become the norm in recent years. Tobacco, cedar, wild flowers, mint and incense add layers of nuance to a core of red/purplish fruit. The 2019 is beautifully done.

The 2019 Meyney has a well-defined, fragrant, floral bouquet of ample red currant and cranberry fruit, touches of pencil shaving and smoke emerging with aeration, followed later by the tertiary aspect that one associates with the appellation. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, black pepper and graphite, tightening toward the finish but still showing fine length. This is a very fine Meyney that may warrant a higher score down the line.

Deep purple-black in color, the 2019 Meyney strides confidently out of the glass with classic notes of cassis, warm plums and baked blackberries plus hints of cedar chest, bay leaves, pencil lead and clove oil plus a waft of underbrush. The medium to full-bodied palate has a generous core of ripe black fruits with a slight touch of oak poking through and a firm backbone of ripe, grainy tannins, finishing with impressive length.

This estate has been on a roll of late, and the 2019 Château Meyney is a terrific wine. Beautiful notes of crème de cassis, spicy oak, dried flowers, and dried tobacco all emerge from the glass, and this beauty is medium to full-bodied, with a seamless texture, ultra-fine tannins, and a great finish. Count me impressed. Not a powerhouse, it should drink nicely right out of the gate yet also evolve for 20 years or more.

The 2019 Meyney is well defined on the bouquet, leaning a little more towards the red side of the fruit spectrum with raspberry, wild strawberry and floral scents. The oak is neatly integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins. It has a citric element from start to finish, a taut line of acidity with light spicy notes towards the finish that shares the brininess of stablemate Grand Puy Ducasse. Very fine. Tasted twice with consistent notes.

Dark garnet in color, with a healthy sweetness to the cherry and raspberry fruits on the nose and palate. The wine is medium-bodied, fresh and energetic. 90-92 Pts

Aromas and flavors of blackberries and blueberries with walnut and coffee-bean notes. Medium to full body, integrated tannins and a flavorful finish. Excellent, but not the 2018.

Barrel Sample. From a reliable estate, this wine is firm in feel. It also has open black fruits that pair alongside the generous tannins. It is good long-term aging.

One of the wines I use as a marker of how good the vintage is in St Estèphe, because it isn’t classified but is in a brilliant location right next door to Montrose. And this is good, extremely concentrated, pure cassis and bilberry flavours, tons of tannins, clear austerity and fairly high acidity as I am getting in a lot of these 2019s. Not the same luscious character as 2018, but in many ways that makes it more typical of the appellation, and the alcohol seems less over the top than in 2018. Lots to enjoy here, not quite up to 2016 standard but not far. Tasted two weeks apart, and if anything its expression had deepened second time around. Hubert de Boüard consultant.
