Maucaillou - Moulis 2021
Château Maucaillou
The terroirs that make up the 90 hectares of Château MAUCAILLOU, are composed of superb outcrops of quaternary alluvial deposits, largely from the layer of Guntz gravel from the Garonne which is at the origin of the Grands Crus Classés of the Médoc.
It is this gravel, whose gleaming surface reflects the sun’s rays up on to the bunches, that enables the grapes to reach full maturity, which is an essential condition for producing great wine.
According to Philippe Dourthe, owned of Château Maucaillou, the philosophy of estate can be resumed as:
"Grand Cru Classé, cannot,
Cru Bourgeois, deigns not,
Château MAUCAILLOU, is."
The 2021 vintageSpring frost on several consecutive days, rainy the summer, resulting in a strong outbreak of mildew. But, by magic (!), the sunshine from the end of August until October allowed us to harvest beautiful grapes in a perfect sanitary state.
Our new vineyard manager and oenologist have done wonders and have helped to instil new virtuous practices which will be perceptible in our productions.
Tasting notesThe wines will have a lower alcohol content than usual which will favour a nice freshness. The Merlots will be softer than usual and the Cabernets Sauvignons more compact.
