The 2021 Maucaillou offers a very creditable showing in bottle, exhibiting aromas of cassis, sweet soil tones and cigar wrapper, followed by a medium-bodied, fleshy palate with bright acids and soft, powdery tannins. This is impressive for the vintage.

Smoky cassis, berries, dark olives, cocoa powder and paprika on the nose. Juicy and fine-grained on the medium- to full-bodied palate with tight tannins and a dusty, savory finish. Well-made for the vintage, even though a bit more polish would take it to the next level. Better in one or two more years.

Maucaillou 2021 leaves me with a balanced impression resulting from the proper use of oak aging. Compared to its previous vintages, a reduced roasted flavor and more pronounced crispy floral and fruity notes can be found, creating a neat structure that is more defined. The tannins are on the powerful side on the finish, but it maintains a good balance all the way through. The 2021 Maucaillou has an airy bouquet with blackberry and wild strawberry scents, touches of peony emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly gritty tannins, but there is balance here, even if it tapers towards the finish. Fine.

Along with Poujeaux and Chasse Spleen, this estate is one of the largest landholders in Moulis's best terroirs, and now changes are afoot at this longtime underachiever, which has hired Lynch Bages's former winemaker and is extending élevage from 10 to 16 months. The 2021 Maucaillou is a solid effort, exhibiting notions of sweet berries, forest floor, cigar wrapper and licorice, followed by a medium to full-bodied, deep and nicely concentrated palate underpinned by lively acids. Given developments at this address, future vintages may be wines to watch.
