Matallana - Ribera del Duero 2021

Telmo Rodriguez: The pioneer reviving Spain's great forgotten terroirs

Matallana - Ribera del Duero

Since 1998, Telmo Rodriguez and Pablo Eguzkiza have come to appreciate the wine region of the Ribera del Duero in a different way. They believe that the true essence of Ribera del Duero lies in its history, which is why they've committed to restoring villages with deep-rooted viticultural traditions by planting on their finest plots. From the calcareous slopes of Sotillo de la Ribera in the north to the reddish mountains of Pardilla in the south, they’ve chosen five villages with unique soils and landscapes. By reviving traditional planting densities, grafting rare varieties from old vineyards, and cultivating bush vines as was done in the past, they now manage 21.5 hectares of vines. The result is a diverse collection of small vineyards that produce a Ribera del Duero wine of true distinction, capturing its authentic character.

The 2021 vintage:

2021 will be remembered as one of the best vintages in recent years.

We experienced an extremely cold winter with some localised late frosts in spring and storms at the beginning of June. The summer was dry with moderate temperatures and cool nights that contributed to the final stage of ripening, favouring the concentration of anthocyanins and the development of fine, easily extractable tannins. Harvest began on October 1st and lasted for two weeks. Perfectly ripe fruit delivered complex aromatic depth and delicate tannins.

Tasting notes

Matallana 2021, an extraordinary wine born from an exceptional vintage. The wine exhibits intricate complexity and fragrant aromatics. Its nose combines red fruits with lively floral nuances and subtle mineral undertones. On the palate, the wine delivers impeccable balance and exquisite tannins, a hallmark of this outstanding growing season. With its impressive depth and fine texture, this wine promises many years of enjoyment ahead".

(Ribera Del Duero DO; from a blend of Tinto Fino, Navarro, Valenciano, Albillo and other varietals sourced from the best sites in Sotillo de la Ribera, Roas, Fuentecén, Fuentemolinos and Pardilla; fermented in oak vats and tanks with indigenous yeasts; aged for 14 months in French oak barrels; 14.5% alcohol). This has great presence and intensity. We’re immediately transported to the crypt or the cathedral. Myrrh, incense, patchouli, molten candle wax. Broad and dense, impressively layered and compact too. Fine-grained but very tactile tannins that get between the layers and structure the gently tapering parameters of the flow of the wine over the palate. Impressive. A true vin de garde. Serious but with great freshness and dynamism.

Plum ruby red, nuanced and subtle with an emphasis on fragrance and lift, violet, peony, rose, finessed tannins, poise and intensity, raspberry and redcurrant fruit. Savoury, subtle, joyful. I love seeing what Telmo Rodriguez can do in Ribero del Duero, and so will you. He's been producing this wine since 1998, with the grapes from the northern area of Sotillo de la Ribera down to Pardilla in the south, 11 vineyards covering 21.5ha across five different villages. Native yeast fermentation.

The Ribera del Duero red 2021 Matallana comes from a challenging year but with very good potential for quality and quantity. It has grapes from different vineyards in five different villages on different soils, where they made a big selection to keep the very best grapes; they got 80,000 kilograms of grapes and ended up producing some 22,000 bottles. It fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel and oak vats. It matured in French oak barrels of different sizes for 14 months. This is a superb classical Ribera del Duero with ripeness, concentration, balance and elegance and the freshness from a cooler year marked by the big snowstorm in January and a milder summer. It has 14.4% alcohol with a pH of 3.72 and 4.6 grams of acidity. It's very spicy and peppery, showy and extroverted, very spicy with some exotic notes of nutmeg, ripe wild berries, violets and herbs. It's medium to full-bodied with very chalky tannins and is tasty, almost salty. 22,450 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2023.
