Matallana - Ribera del Duero 2021
Telmo Rodriguez: The pioneer reviving Spain's great forgotten terroirs
Matallana - Ribera del Duero
Since 1998, Telmo Rodriguez and Pablo Eguzkiza have come to appreciate the wine region of the Ribera del Duero in a different way. They believe that the true essence of Ribera del Duero lies in its history, which is why they've committed to restoring villages with deep-rooted viticultural traditions by planting on their finest plots. From the calcareous slopes of Sotillo de la Ribera in the north to the reddish mountains of Pardilla in the south, they’ve chosen five villages with unique soils and landscapes. By reviving traditional planting densities, grafting rare varieties from old vineyards, and cultivating bush vines as was done in the past, they now manage 21.5 hectares of vines. The result is a diverse collection of small vineyards that produce a Ribera del Duero wine of true distinction, capturing its authentic character.
The 2021 vintage:
2021 will be remembered as one of the best vintages in recent years.
We experienced an extremely cold winter with some localised late frosts in spring and storms at the beginning of June. The summer was dry with moderate temperatures and cool nights that contributed to the final stage of ripening, favouring the concentration of anthocyanins and the development of fine, easily extractable tannins. Harvest began on October 1st and lasted for two weeks. Perfectly ripe fruit delivered complex aromatic depth and delicate tannins.
