Matallana (BIO-ORGANIC) - Ribera del Duero 2022

Telmo Rodriguez: The pioneer reviving Spain's great forgotten terroirs

Matallana - Ribera del Duero

Since 1998, Telmo Rodriguez and Pablo Eguzkiza have come to appreciate the wine region of the Ribera del Duero in a different way. From the northern area of Sotillo de la Ribera with its calcareous slopes to the reddish mountains of Pardilla in the south, they chose five villages with different soils and landscapes.

They believe that by combining their best elements they can create a unique Ribera del Duero wine. They have introduced the age-old way of planting densities; grafted all the rare varieties from their old vineyards and farmed the vines as bush vines as was always done in the past. The result is a diverse collection of smallholdings which offer the opportunity to create a Ribera del Duero wine of distinction with all its authentic characteristics. Today, Matallana has eleven vineyards totalling 21.5 ha distributed across five villages (Sotillo de la Ribera, Roa, Fuentecén, Fuentemolinos and Pardilla).

The 2022 vintage

The 2022 vintage was marked by scarce rainfall and unusually high temperatures that persisted from winter through to the end of the growing cycle. Although spring was somewhat more favourable, allowing for healthy and balanced budbreak, a heatwave in May accelerated vine growth and brought flowering and fruit set forward.
Summer continued with high temperatures and very limited rainfall, leading to an overall advancement of the main phenological stages compared to historical averages. Significant differences in ripening were observed between plots, influenced by factors such as altitude, soil type and vine age.

Tasting notes:

Matallana 2022 achieves a perfect balance between the ripeness of the harvest and the tension characteristic of a demanding vintage. Its aromatic profile is refined and expressive, with abundant fruit, highlighting red cherry, alongside subtle spicy notes of nutmeg and white pepper. On the palate, it shows precision, freshness, and a supple texture, with a savoury, slightly saline finish that adds length and depth. The fruit is presented with clarity and precision, allowing the deeper layers to reveal a restrained vinification that remains respectful of the vineyard’s character.

Dark-fruited with subtle chocolate, this Ribera del Duero opens with layers of blackberries, pepper and graphite. The palate is full-bodied and composed, with finely etched, dusty yet refined tannins that frame the velvety fruit without overpowering it. It is broad but with precision and tension. A great effort in one of the warmest and driest vintages in recent history. It can be drunk now, but best from 2027.

(Ribera Del Duero DO; from a blend of Tinto Fino, Navarro, Valenciano, Albillo and other varietals sourced from the best sites in Sotillo de la Ribera, Roas, Fuentecén, Fuentemolinos and Pardilla; fermented in oak vats and tanks with indigenous yeasts; aged for 14 months in French oak barrels; 14.5% alcohol). Much more closed aromatically than Dolio at first. Introvert. Very soft and gentle with an incredibly sensuous and pixilated raspberry and loganberry fruit; a little mulberry and black berry with aeration in the mouth. Plump, substantial and, above all, spherical in form in the mouth. The soft tannins caress the palate all the way to a distant horizon. Lovely.

Balsamic nose, rose petals, blackcurrants with Maraschino cherries. Tannic and grippy but not dry, this has flesh but turns more savoury than overtly fruity giving liquorice, vanilla cream, cola and tobacco touches. It’s quite a serious wine with less charm on offer right now but lots of energy and precision to make up for it. Needs a while for the wood to integrate and to shake some of the seriousness off but there's no faulting the precision to each and every element and the fruit is amazingly pure. Owner/winemaker pair Telmo Rodriguez and Pablo Eguzkiza.

A little reserved at this early stage, you can feel the hew and heft of the tannins keeping everything in check. There is a sense of precision and crafted architecture, concentrated but with the lightest of touches. Energy and power, dark black fruits, exceptional quality. 21.5ha across eleven vineyards, winemakers Telmo Rodriguez and Pablo Eguzkiza. Harvest September 22 to October 6 after an exceptionally dry season, native yeast fermentation in oak vats and stainless steel tanks.

The current release from Ribera del Duero is the 2022 Matallana, the only wine they produce in the appellation, mixing origins and soils from five different villages—Sotillo de la Ribera, Roa, Fuentecén, Fuentemolinos and Pardilla. It fermented in oak and stainless steel vats and matured in French oak barrels of different ages for 14 months. It's a serious and traditional Ribera, with power, the concentration from the year and the elegant rusticity from the zone. But it doesn't feel like a wine from a warm vintage, and IT WAS warm, extremely warm. The harvest started eight days earlier than in 2021, denoting a warmer year. The grapes—a Tempranillo-based field blend that also contains some Garnacha, Bobal and Albillo—delivered a wine with 14.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.72 and 4.34 grams of acidity. It's serious, harmonious and very balanced, with fine-grained tannins. It's a triumph over the adverse conditions of the year. 23,883 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2024.
