Masseto - Toscana IGT 2021

Masseto, a magical place

On Italy’s Tuscan Coast, near the village of Bolgheri, lies a remarkable hillside overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, home to Masseto—a wine that was never supposed to exist. The success of Masseto is shaped by three key elements: the soil, the vineyard, and human intuition.

Masseto is not just a wine, but also the name of the vineyard and estate where it is produced. In the early 1980s, against all advice and tradition, the first vines were planted on this slope. The gamble paid off. The unique combination of blue clay soil, cooling coastal breezes, and the Mediterranean’s reflective light creates a wine of power, elegance, and complexity. Since its debut in 1986, Masseto has achieved international acclaim.

The 2021 Vintage:

100pts by Antonio Galloni: "The 2021 Masseto is a stunner."

The 2021 vintage began with a rainy winter that replenished the soil. After a dry March, steady growth led to optimal blossoming by late May. A warm, dry summer followed, but the earlier rains helped sustain the vines,  resulting in concentrated grapes with high quality potential.

Tasting notes:

A harmony of vibrant, mysterious aromas welcomes the nose into every glass of Masseto 2021. These aromas continue on the palate. The wine elegantly and captivatingly fills the mouth with succulence, juice and persistence. Masseto 2021 is a wine that knows how to impress, persisting throughout the tasting, with its savoury aftertaste and fullness of expression. The appreciative manifesto of the rich 2021 vintage.

Masseto 2021 (Toscana IGT; 100% Merlot; tasted with Marco Balsimelli at the property in June 2024; 15.5% alcohol). Incredible. Such lift and purity, integration and harmony. Black raspberry, mulberry perhaps. A touch of toasted brioche. A lovely natural sweetness. A delicacy and a subtly that I don’t quite find with Massetino. Hyacinth bulb. Cedar released in the mouth when one draws in some air – so beautifully and enticingly. Black pen ink and more and more cedar with gentle aeration. Creamy. Parfumier’s essences of petals – with rather more lilac, lily and hyacinth than rose. Graphite. Wonderful texture. So soft and caressing, like a million layers (milles feuilles plus!) of silk but actually with a deeper and richer texture – so, more cashmere perhaps than silk. Vibrant, fluid, dynamic, floaty and rippling in its sapidity. Radiant in its incredible dynamism and energy. Very special. Endless on the finish – if there is one! The very slight suggestion of alcohol on the finish keeps this from attaining perfection. 99.

Concentrated grapes in a hot vintage means expect this to be a rich, concentrated Masseto, exuberant with luxurious tannins. Beautiful depth on the aromatics from the first moment, with rich fruit flavours that flood the palate, tons of liquorice, olive pit, chocolate shavings, cocoa bean, rosemary, freshly cut herbs, underbrush, opulent and powerful, flash of heat that subsides after a moment but is evident on the opening. Eleonora Marconi winemaker, Marchesi Frescobaldi owners. 11ha vineyard, 24 months ageing in barrel then 12 months in bottle before release, 100% new oak. Back to 100% Merlot in this vintage.

Dark purple color. Blackberry, blueberry, flint, gunmetal and currant aromas with undertones of violets and mocha. Full-bodied with ultra-fine tannins that are very polished, giving a silky texture that fills your mouth. It’s fresh yet very deep, with tannins that last for minutes. Finely crafted and classy. Pure merlot. Drink after 2029.

In 2021, Masseto returns to its original 100% Merlot concept, following two years which saw the inclusion of 15% Cabernet Franc. Following a mild and wet winter, spring was dry and the summer was characterised by higher than average temperatures and periods of drought. Luckily, the vines were quenched by the water reserves built up at the beginning of the year. Masseto 2021 really has everything: it's vertical in shape and saline in character, with succulence of fruit, freshness of profile and finesse of tannins. Mediterranean herbs accompany ripe dark fruit scents and flavours which are yet to reveal all their depth and charm.

The 2021 Masseto is a stunner. It also shows how much the estate has evolved in recent years. I was reminded of that recently when I drank the 2001, considered by many observers, including this one, to be one of the greatest wines ever made here. The 2021

The 2021 Masseto is back to being 100% Merlot. Recent past vintages saw a tiny part of Cabernet Franc. That second varietal in the blend represents the proverbial "tax" one must pay in the face of climate change, especially when making wine on the sun-drenched Tuscan Coast. This is a very rich and elaborate expression with the extract, tannic tightness and the hefty 15.5% alcohol content to match. It comes off as quite big-boned or monotone. The wine is redolent of blackberry confit and cooked cherry, with a wide range of sweet oak spices to close. There is dark chocolate with a thin lining of creamy mint filling. Within the context of that fullness and generous fruit weight, Masseto is quite a commitment in terms of price and further cellaring. More bottle aging is an absolute requirement.

Tasted from barrel, the 2021 Masseto pours a youthful magenta hue and brings forward an inviting bouquet with some blue fruit coming through and more chocolate aromas as well with to me it is fresh with blackberry, and purple violet flowers. It boasts outstanding concentration and depth, with a plush, cushiony texture at this stage, incredible finesse and balance, and a wonderful mineral aroma of wet asphalt coming through. A harmonious wine with well-integrated oak, this may be the best vintage of this cuvée that I have tasted to date.
