Massetino - Toscana IGT 2022

Massetino, the same pedigree as its elder brother

Masseto, since the 2017 harvest, is accompanied by its second wine, Massetino. Both are grown on 11 hectares on the hill of Masseto and are transformed from precious grapes into desirable bottles of wine in the cellar designed by the Zito Mori studio and inaugurated in April 2019. Massetino’s personality is already self-assured as it shares the same pedigree as Masseto. Just like its elder sibling it juxtaposes power and opulence with discretion and classicism.

The 2022 Vintage:

The 2022 vintage was marked by a standard winter and a cool, dry spring, followed by a long period of heat and drought. Summer rainfall helped restore balance to the vines before harvest. The weather conditions in September were ideal for grape maturation, with cool nighttime temperatures promoting the accumulation of sugars, aromas, and tannins. The harvest took place under excellent conditions, allowing for the optimal harvest date to be chosen for each plot of land.

Tasting notes

Born during the warm days of this intense vintage, the nose of Massetino 2022 already expresses all the warmth of the sun that it encountered as it ripened in the vineyard. Vibrancy and length on the palate encourages you to return to the glass to grasp the profound nuances of Massetino 2022, which closes with a freshness reminiscent of pleasant September nights. As for its firm tannins and pulpy red fruit flavours, they carry a beautiful fullness on the palate that never seems to subside.

The 2022 Massetino is plump, juicy and irrepressibly gorgeous. Succulent dark-toned fruit, new leather and mocha build nicely as this racy, open-knit second wine from Masseto shows off its undeniable charm. This is a relatively understated, delicate edition of Massetino.

Naturally lower vigour vines because of the clay soils, so lower yield, less density in the plantation. Plush, lush flavours, purity of blueberry and cassis fruits, chalky tannins, rose petals, spherical, cocoa bean, dark chocolate, liquorice, strong character. 30% new oak. 94.

Massetino 2022 (Toscana IGT; 90% Merlot; 10% Cabernet Franc; 15% alcohol; tasted with Marco Balsimelli the property in June 2024). Gosh. Wow. This is very distinct, very vertical and lifted, intense and highly expressive aromatically. Parfumier’s essences of flowers. Hyacinth and hyacinth bulb. Saffron. Wild rosemary. Mulberry. Wild blueberry. Maybe a hint of lavender. Graphite. Pencil-shavings. So succulent. Plump but with quite a tight frame accentuating the sense of density and compactness. Layered vertically but with great depth – tapering to a distant vanishing point below. Slightly chewy tannins grip on the finish after the silkily textured opening. Long and pure, very well sustained. Truly special. 96.

This is refined and fresh with hints of sandalwood to the beautiful blue fruits. It’s medium-bodied with creamy and polished tannins that frame the blue fruit and hints of crushed stone. Succulent and juicy with a crunchy personality. You want a sip right away. Second wine of the highest quality from Masseto. So drinkable and wonderful. Drink or hold.

Clear cinnamon and baking spices on the nose, a ton of personality, Tuscan character in spades. Spice, liquorice and underbrush, plump red fruits, sweet but balanced by fresh acidities and a ton of lift on the finish. Moreish and easy to share. Eleonora Marconi winemaker, Marchesi Frescobaldi owners. 11ha vineyard, a classic year for Tuscany, if on the extreme end of that with high temperatures and low rainfall. 50% new oak for ageing, 12 months in barrel then 3 months in bottle.

Massetino is considered the second wine of Masseto, but I'm beginning to come to the conclusion that it's far more than that. It represents around one-third of the production of Masseto, and judging by the quality of this 2022, next year's release of the grand vin could be absolutely phenomenal. Massetino has always incorporated a portion Cabernet Franc since its first vintage, 2017 – 10% in 2022. A cool and dry spring led to a slightly late budbreak, followed by 75 days of drought and high temperatures. Summer storms eventually came along to restore balance, and the cool September evenings were perfect for the grapes reach full ripeness. Each parcel was vinified separately and spontaneously in concrete tanks before undergoing malolactic fermentation in barriques, 50% new. After 12 months, the final blend was made and the wine spent a further three months in concrete before bottling. Bright and stony, there's so much energy here. Zingy and sapid, it combines fresh Mediterranean herbs and poised fruit, with more verticality than Masseto 2021 and just as much concentration. Incredible precision and beautiful freshness, especially considering the vintage.
