Massetino - Toscana IGT 2023

Masseto, the expression of a unique terroir on the Tuscan coast

Masseto is the name for a unique wine, vineyard, and estate. The potential of the slope where the vineyard stands on the Tuscan coast was sensed in the early 1980s when the first vines were planted, contrary to all odds, advice and local tradition.

The intuition paid off. The blue clay soil, the cool coastal breezes, and the excellent refraction of light guaranteed by the Mediterranean Sea contribute to the intriguing mix of power, elegance and complexity that distinguishes the estate’s wine.

Masseto, since the 2017 harvest, is accompanied by its second wine, Massetino. Both are grown on 11 hectares on the hill of Masseto and are transformed from precious grapes into desirable bottles of wine in the cellar designed by the Zito Mori studio and inaugurated in April 2019. Massetino’s personality is already self-assured as it shares the same pedigree as Masseto. Just like its elder sibling it juxtaposes power and opulence with discretion and classicism.

The 2023 Vintage

2023 was a challenging year: mother nature revealed all her power, at the same time preserving the most important moments in the biological cycle of our vines. Winter was mild, with temperatures and rainfall slightly above average that favored early plant growth. Spring instead brought abundant rain, which fed the water reserves that were certainly useful for the summer, but at the same time saw our team busy in the vineyard in precise selection work. Summer was characterized by high temperatures, around 35 °C, although without reaching extreme peaks. This situation, together with the spring water reserves, brought about a gradual and regular ripening of the grapes, reaching excellent concentration. Rains at the end of August and cool nights in September favoured the development of aromatic complexity, preserved the acidity of the wine and enhanced the balance between phenolic and technological maturity.

Tasting notes:

Massetino 2023’s bouquet is already very pleasant. The fresh and intoxicating red fruit accompanying the first sip clearly conveys the potential of this vintage. Merlot and Cabernet Franc merge on the palate, exalting the wine’s concentration. This Massetino reflects the characteristics of the vintage: juiciness and length persist throughout the tasting, ending with a slight tangy note.

(Toscana IGT; 91% Merlot; 9% Cabernet Franc; 15% alcohol). The Cabernet Franc is less evident aromatically than in the 2022, though there’s only a fraction less. Elegant, harmonious, rather poised and classy. Slightly introvert at first. Creamy. With aeration this becomes more floral, with Iily and lilac notes the most evident . Wondrously fine-grained and incredibly deep, dark and rich at its sumptuous core. Very classical with a gracious evolution over the palate. Tapering towards the finish, but that is disrupted by the squeeze and grip of the tannins that form a delightful fantail.

Lush and well-marked by toasty oak, this red displays plum, blackberry, leather, vanilla and salt flavors. A dense matrix of tannins lends support as this extends on the lightly chewy finish. Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2026 through 2033.

A dark, super-intense, rich and complex wine. On the nose it shows restrained bramble fruit, vanilla, cloves, eucalyptus and leather. Lots of graphite on the palate, with firm, velvety tannins, chocolate flavors, refreshing acidity and a chalky, oaky finish. Drink or hold.

The 2023 Massetino is an attractive and expressive wine. Medium in body, the 2023 offers up an attractive mix of dark plum, mocha, new leather, cedar and espresso. Time in the glass brings out pretty floral and spice top notes. The oak and extraction feel just a bit pushed for the wine's mid-weight structure. The 2023 was done in a period of transition with technical teams and winemakers, and that is evident in this particular vintage.

This curls out of the glass with woodsmoke and campfire, totally delicious, so juicy and fragrant. Fruit forward with red cherry, plump raspberries, creamy cappuccino and liquorice, great quality and easy to love. Marco Balsimelli Production Director, Gaia Cinnirella Winemaker, 50% new oak.

‘The idea of Massetino is to create a more approachable wine,’ states winemaker, Gaia Cinnirella. And combined with the plump juiciness and aromatic appeal of 2023, this is incredibly enticing. Ripe dark berry scents mingle with damp earth, Mediterranean scrub and chocolatey nuances. It has a steely energy, coiled and bright, its vertical structure padded out by generous juicy, creamy red and black berries, and supported by fine-grained tannins. It's a bold expression this year, with a slightly drying woody finish that should resolve with time in the bottles, but it's countered by freshness and a really lovely line of acidity which runs through the body. Delicious!
