Marquis d'Alesme - Margaux 2023

Château Marquis d'Alesme, at the crossroads between East and West

At the heart of the Bordeaux region - precisely in Margaux - there is a wine that is a world in its own right. Under the watchful eye of a family, this wine full of character brings the Orient and the West together. Dragon scales and moon gates stand alongside columns and arcades in perfect harmony. A sea of vines stretches before us, with the Rising Sun on its horizon.

His taste for challenges and his eagerness to breathe new life into a potential treasure led him to acquire Château Marquis d'Alesme in 2006, a third Classified Growth in 1855, whose estate he undertook to overhaul completely.

Today, it's Nathalie Perrodo that embodies the values of her family on the wineries they own, Château Labégorce, Château Marquis d'Alesme and La Tour de Mons.

The 2023 Marquis d'Alesme Becker has a well-defined bouquet that blossoms in the glass, beautiful black cherries and blueberry fruit, very floral and perhaps more expressive than the Labégorce. The palate is medium-bodied with silky tannins, quite lush and yet there is superb tension with a caressing, intense finish. Outstanding.

The perfume pops with flowers, cherries, mint, tobacco, smoke, mocha, and cedar. On the palate, the wine is elegant, soft, and lifted, with a spicy edge to the red berries. There is a chalky, marine influence that comes through on the back end of the finish. The wine blends 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc. 13% ABV. 3.5 pH. The harvest took place from September 16 - October 6. Yields were only 32 hectoliters per hectare. Drink from 2028-2055. 93-95 Pts.

Grip and tension, with tomato leaf, peony, lemongrass, slate, pummice stone, spiced plum and damson fruit, not the ink of the Cabernet in the northern Médoc, but caressing and full of fragrant pleasure. 45% new oak for ageing, and proof again that this estate is becoming one of the quiet scene-stealers of the Margaux appellation.

The 2023 Marquis d'Alesme is impressive. Raspberry jam, blood orange, white flowers, mint and lavender abound. Silky, elegant tannins wrap it all together in style. A closing burst of bright acids and lifted floral notes lends the last kick of resonance. Classy, elegant and polished, the 2023 is one of the best recent editions I have encountered. Tasted two times.

The 2023 Marquis d'Alesme Becker has a well-defined bouquet like its sibling Labégorce. It unfurls more slowly in the glass, revealing perfumed iris and violet scents interwoven into the black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with very pliant tannin. Slightly powdery in texture, it possesses fine weight and an expressive, lightly spiced finish. This is a well-crafted, modestly endowed Margaux, though this year I am more smitten by the Labégorce.

Strong ruby, purple reflections, brightening on the rim. Restrained aromas, delicate cherry fruit, some plums, a hint of orange zest. Medium body, red berryish and fresh, clean, a lean food wine, will be accessible early.
