Marques De Riscal, Tapias - Rioja 2019

Marqués de Riscal, one of the oldest wineries in Rioja

Marqués de Riscal was founded in Elciego (Álava) in 1858 by Guillermo Hurtado de Amézaga. As early as 1858 it became the first winery in Rioja to produce wines according to Bordeaux methods. In 2006, it inaugurated the City of Wine, with a hotel designed by the architect Frank O. Gehry, which is the most avant-garde work carried out to date by a Spanish winery. In 2021 Marqués de Riscal has been named the second-best vineyard in the world and first in Europe in the World's Best Vineyards 2021 competition.

Las Tapias is a 15-hectare vineyard plot which ranks among the best of Marqués de Riscal’s vines. It is situated in Elciego. It dates from 1968 and was planted in the traditional way by planting rooted cuttings and grafting them in the vineyard with grafts from an old vine plant of unique quality. From this singular vineyard a selected area of 2.85 hectares has been set aside from the rest of the plot for the production of Tapias 2019.

Production for this first vintage : 3000 bts

The vintage
One important characteristic of this vineyard is how slowly full ripeness is reached, the moment at which the characteristic flavours of this plot appear. 2019 vintage is characterised by having a low pH and high acidity, which is positive for ageing and for the subsequent evolution of the wines in the bottle.

Tasting notes
Very expressive aromas on the nose with notes of liquorice, cinnamon and black pepper, with just a subtle hint of the long cask-ageing, thanks to its great complexity and ripe, concentrated fruit. Fresh and easy to drink on the palate, good backbone and lovely, polished tannins. The long, persistent finish leaves gentle balsamic reminders of the finest quality.

The deep and dramatic nose of damson plum, soy sauce and cocoa powder pulls you into this enormous, rich and very concentrated Rioja. The tannins are so fine that this already feels silky, in spite of all the power. Seriously dry, but almost perfectly balanced at the long, chocolatey finish. The French oak is impeccably integrated. Delicious now, but great aging potential! The first vintage of this wine. 100% tempranillo from a 2.5 hectare section of the high-altitude, terraced Tapias site in Rioja Alavesa. Drink or hold.

Complex and very expressive, effusing a savory character with its cured meat, pencil lead, dark chocolate and fine, sweet spices that are seamlessly interwoven with the sweet red and black berry fruit. Really creamy and ripe tannins dissipate to the seductive, sweet berries. This is voluptuous and concentrated, but restrained and savory at the same time, followed by a very long, creamy finish. The tannins are pure silk. Drink or hold.

The very first release of this wine which is a plot selection of 2.85ha from a 15ha vineyard dating back to 1968 in Elciego. Richly scented, a dark nose full of wild berries, dark cherries, toasted dark chocolate, vanilla, cinnamon and liquorice spice - a combination of sweet and exotic aromas but also with some rose petal perfume which is lovely. Smells deep and concentrated. Smooth and seductive, this courses straight along the palate, linear yet juicy and succulent but also quite firm and striking. Slightly austere, youthful and spiced, there is a robustness to the tannins that does settle after a few minutes with the high acidity giving a touch of dryness and bitterness  - orange peel - but it's complete with a fresh core and a sense of classicism. I like the detail on show, it feels sophisticated and polished with confidence. Effortless and impactful.

Historically Marqués de Riscal has always been strongly linked with Bordeaux, so in some ways its appearance on the Place is a return to source, and its certainly a strong name to add to the roster. Old vines of up to 100 years old for this new cuvée that was originally part of the blend for Baron Chirel, then separated out from 2017. Spiced redcurrant and raspberry fruits, Rioja signature, with sweet and charred oak tannins, toasted earth, marzipan and orange peel. Fresh and sculpted, a beautiful wine, with balance and a soft caress of tannins, edge of bitterness on the finish gives definition. For now just 3,000 bottles, aged in 50% new French oak, 3.6ph. Terraced, old vineyeards located in Elciego village, from a specific 3ha sector of Las Tapias vineyards, rich in iron oxide soils. This was a warm vintage in Rioja with small berries, small clusters, cool nights though so late picking beginning October 2. Axel Marchal and Valerie Lavigne consultants. Tasted twice.
