Madame de Beaucaillou - Haut-Médoc 2023

Madame de Beaucaillou, a tribute to Madame Eugène-Borie.

This new wine comes from Ducru Beaucaillou's vineyards located in the Haut-Médoc; plots brought by Madame Eugène-Borie on her marriage and more recently by the acquisition of plots from Madame Fort-Pradère.

Madame de Beaucaillou is a tribute to the woman who chaired the Supervisory Board from 1998 to 2020. The opportunity to put the spotlight on this great lady who will join the long line of female owners of Ducru-Beaucaillou, equally inspiring and demanding. All of them had an essential role in the rise to fame of Ducru-Beaucaillou.

Madame de Beaucauillou is an introduction to the Borie signature.

The 2023 vintage

Tasting notes

A lovely, delicately perfumed nose combining red and black fruits, plums and cherries, and a touch of spring flowers. The flavours are well concentrated giving depth and breadth to the palate, with a fresh fruity finish. Well-constructed.

The 2023 Madame De Beaucaillou is a terrific Haut-Médoc, with a juicy, medium-bodied, elegant style as well as the pure, ripe, red and almost blue fruit character of the vintage. Spice, spring flowers, and hints of charcoal all define the aromatics, and it has beautiful tannins as well as balance.

The 2023 Madame de Beaucaillou is medium to deep garnet-purple in color. It zips out of the glass with sparky notes of juicy raspberries and wild strawberries with underlying suggestions of cloves, roses, and dusty soil. The medium-bodied palate is bright and refreshing, with youthful red berry flavors and a lightly chewy texture, finishing with a touch of herbal zing. The blend is 59% Merlot, 37% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 4% Petit Verdot.

The 2023 Madame de Beaucaillou is a very pretty, aromatic wine. Crushed red berry fruit, cinnamon, dried herbs and a kiss of French oak are all nicely delineated. This juicy, perfumed, Merlot-based Haut-Médoc is a fine choice for drinking over the next decade or so. The 2023 is absolutely delicious.

The 2023 Madame de Beaucaillou has a delightful bouquet with brambly red fruit, rose petals and cedar. Less Petit Verdot in the blend means it is less floral than the 2022. The palate is grippy and quite peppery on the entry—a little angular at the moment, but barrel-maturation will smooth the edges. That cracked black pepper element reappears toward the finish that needs more persistency. Give it three to four years in bottle if you can.
