Lynch Moussas - Pauillac 2024

Lynch Moussas, a flagship wine of the Castéja family

The history of Château Lynch Moussas dates back to 1610, when Domaine de Moussas-Bages belonged to the Jehan family, who were wine merchants and owners of several estates. Since 1919, it has been intimately linked to that of the Castéja family. Château Lynch-Moussas, classified as a Grand Cru Classé in Pauillac in 1855, has been a valuable asset to the family. Over the decades, each generation has been dedicated to developing, modernising and enhancing this Grand Cru.

The vineyard, covering 62 hectares (153 acres) in the heart of the Pauillac appellation, produces grapes of the finest quality. It is situated in close proximity to a number of other Grand Cru Classé vineyards, including Château Latour, Château Lynch-Bages, Château Pichon-Longueville Baron, Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste and, of course, Château Batailley.

The 2024 vintage :

The 2024 vintage stands out for its elegance, freshness, silky tannins, and its airy, floral, and delicately fruity style — a luminous wine, born of a demanding year, yet masterfully handled.

Tasting notes :

"With its brilliant robe, the wine charms with an expressive nose, dominated by fresh fruits (blackcurrant, blackberry, redcurrant) and lifted by delicate hints of sweet spices. The palate is smooth from the first sip, flowing seamlessly with a well-integrated tannic structure. The whole is balanced and precise, supported by lovely freshness and a flavorful finish."

Blackcurrant and cherry fruit, really open and expressive. Chewy fruit, lifted quite bright acidity but balanced and in line with the mineral - liquorice edged tannins. Punchy but round and filling in the best way. Nicely worked, tannins are upfront but really work. Tannic but fleshy and fruity not dry. I like it. Cooling quite menthol and aniseed spice on the finish. A touch severe on the finish in terms of oak spice.

Shows length and structure in a linear, compacted way with blueberries, blackcurrants and hints of lemongrass. Medium-bodied and racy. Cool fruit. 78% cabernet sauvignon and 22% merlot.

The 2024 Lynch-Moussas was matured in 58% new oak. The bouquet is quite expressive with touches of violet borrowed from Margaux. The oak is nicely integrated and crisp black and blue fruit unfold in the glass. Medium-bodied with saturated tannins, this is quite a bold and comparatively precocious Pauillac with a thickly-textured finish. It will be interesting to revisit this once in bottle.

The 2024 Lynch-Moussas is a potent, deep wine. Black cherry, lavender, clove and licorice convey an impression of somber intensity. There's gorgeous textural depth and resonance in the glass. This is a fine effort for the vintage. Classy.

Cedar, cigar wrapper, and black, with red currants are already starting to shine in this medium-bodied, soft, expressive, vibrant, chewy, charmer. The refreshing touch of mint leaf in the finish adds a nice complexity. The wine blends 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, with 22% Merlot.13.5% ABV. Drink from 2027-2045.

An estate that has been quietly improving its expression of Cabernet Sauvignon classicism over the past few years, and here you'll find sappy, bright redcurrant, blackberry and raspberry fruit, a little leafy but with good length and soft campfire smoke, and an unfussy expression of the appellation. 58% new oak for ageing.

Dark ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, delicate edge brightening. Delicate notes of dried plum, a hint of fig, candied orange zest, with delicate nuances of wood in the background. Sweet fruit, somewhat broad, red berry notes, delicately nutty on the finish, offers uncomplicated drinking pleasure.

A bright and very pure red-berry fruit – loganberry and raspberry – mark this out as they are far from common in the wines of the appellation in this vintage which it typically darker berry fruited. But with aeration, the fruit profile darkens a little with the arrival of damsons and purple plums. This is fresh but the acidity is very well managed and balanced, the oak very moderate and the result is a finely-finessed wine that will drink well young. The tannins are not as refined as, say, for Batailley, but there’s a sense of Pauillac authenticity than here I like very much.
