In 1765 Tsarina Catherine II of Russia published a decree on distillation in which she granted the Russian nobility preferential treatment for the production of alcoholic beverages on her land. Thus begins the golden age of Russian vodka, each nobleman believing it was his duty to produce a wide range of spirits made according to his own recipes. It is these same recipes as well as information on the technology used in the production, rediscovered in the archives, which form the basis of the strong distilled alcoholic beverages we make in the Cognac region of France. During the XVIII century, vodka was produced in small copper stills through a process of several distillations. This equipment was on the property of each nobleman. However, this technique for the production of vodka, as well as the equipment used, was entirely lost in Russia. On the other hand, a similar technique remains in use to date in France for the production of drinks such as cognac. Previously, all expensive drinks had a kind of taste, be it fruits or herbs. Thus, in order to observe the Russian traditions of that time, only flavored drinks are produced.
