Latour - Pauillac 2016
Château Latour sits at the heart of the Médoc wine region, about 50 km northwest of Bordeaux, where the story of Bordeaux’s vineyards first began. Its Grand Vin is made exclusively from old vines, averaging 60 years of age, planted within the Enclos—the estate’s finest terroir. Covering 47 hectares, these vineyards overlook the Gironde estuary.
Since 1993, under the ownership of the Pinault family, the estate has undergone major changes, all with the goal of preserving Château Latour’s unwavering commitment to excellence in its wines.
The 2016 vintage
A mild and wet winter coupled with a cool March led to the Merlot bud break occurring on 24th March and the Cabernet-Sauvignon on 30th March. Fine and warm weather early May speeded up vegetative growth, though stormy conditions during the second half of the month increased disease pressure. The first week of June was dry with temperatures between 20-25°C and this brought on the flowering. July was exceptionally hot and dry though good soil water reserves enabled the vines to resist these extreme weather conditions. Early August, 8mm of beneficial rain accelerated the ripening process with the Merlot berries changing colour on 10th August and the Cabernet-Sauvignon two days later. September was sunny and warm, but just as signs of hydric and thermal stress were becoming noticeable, 35mm of rain provided some relief for the vines so the grapes continued ripening in optimal conditions.
The 2016 vintage, renowned for its precision and concentration, is sure to make a lasting impression on both the palate and the memory. It has received a perfect 100-point score six times.
Tasting notes:
Deep and dark in colour, this 2016 Château Latour has a very sensuous nose of violets and rose petals with blueberries, black olives and a chalky minerality. On the palate this regal wine has an incredible complexity and concentration of flavours with a backbone of focused, taut tannins and a longlasting, bright finish.
