Lassegue - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2022

Château Lassègue, from a transatlantic partnership, a Grand Cru Classé is born

The history of Château Lassègue is above all that of the alliance between, on the one hand Jess Jackson and Barbara Banke, two visionaries; and on the other hand Pierre Seillan, French winegrower and winemaker. A story of families passionate about wine who succumbed, in 2003, to the charm and assets of this beautiful property in the Saint-Emilion Grand Cru appellation.

Upon their arrival, the two families launched a geological study of the whole vineyard. It revealed an exceptional diversity of terroirs spread over 36 hectares, which encouraged them to push the boundaries of a “parcellaire” approach, and adopt a "micro-crus" philosophy, inspired by Burgundy. High standards and precision drive every action here, from the construction of a winemaking tool to the selection for the barrels of the best wood from the French stave mill, owned by Jess Jackson. An unparalleled meticulousness, which makes it possible to extract the essence of each soil and to give the wine of Château Lassègue its entire dimension.

The efforts of both families are rewarded in 2022 when Château Lassègue became a Grand Cru Classé of Saint-Emilion.

The 2022 vintage

The 2022 vintage gave our vigneron several sleepless nights, as Lassègue’s terroir adapted to challenging climactic conditions and came through to produce a wine that will develop into a great vintage.

The deep-rooted old vines adapted to the lack of water throughout the season by reaching the moisture in deeper layers of clay, allowing us to reach optimal maturity for each parcel, while elevated acidities despite the overall hot conditions predicted an excellent vintage. The harvest took place in mild and dry conditions, kicking off the 15th of September with the Merlots and continuing with each micro-cru until the 1st of October with the last Cabernets.

Classification for Lassegue in this vintage, two decades after the Jackson-Banke family bought the estate and asked Pierre Seillan to head things up - he has now handed over to his son Nicolas Seillan. Their experience over in California means that hot and dry seasons are not a surprise to this winemaking team, and this takes the high spice and concentrated black fruits in its stride. It's big and muscular, but picks up the pace through the palate, ensuring enough slate and pumice texture to stop things getting heavy at any point. Powerful, concentrated, impressive. 65% new oak for ageing.

The 2022 Lassegue unfurls from the glass with notes of ripe dark berries, chocolate, cassis and licorice intertwined with prominent oaky notes. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated and deep, it's framed by structured yet velvety tannins with a fleshy core of fruit and a long, mineral-driven finish. It needs time to digest its élevage.

The 2022 Château Lassègue is terrific and just another incredibly impressive Saint-Emilion in this sensational vintage. Based on 60% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, its deep ruby/plum hue is followed by a ripe yet vibrant perfume of darker berries, truffly earth, tobacco, and floral nuances. With plenty of classic Right Bank minerality as well as a full-bodied, layered, opulent mouthfeel, it has sweet yet present tannins, impeccable balance, and outstanding length. It offers ample pleasure today yet will cruise for two decades in cold cellars.

Gorgeous vivid purple colour in the glass, so vibrant. Smells heady and perfumed with cool and ripe black and blue fruits. Aromatically expressive and alive. Smooth and so supple, clear and pure, the texture is like silk, smooth with amazingly finessed tannins and a real density of flavour. Concentrated, almost thick in terms of texture, this is a rich, full bodied wine with complexity. Well built, fairly broad and muscular, you don't get so much mouthwatering acidity due to the concentration but this is sleek and suave. A great balance between power and seduction with enjoyable mineral, liquorice and dark chocolate aspects. Potent, poised and compelling. Winemaker Nicolas Seilhan Nicolas Seillan winemaker. A yield of 38hl/ha. Harvest 15 September - 1 October. 3.67pH. 100% oak barrels.

Château Lassègue has been steadily refining its winemaking process over the years, consistently producing exceptional wines regardless of vintage. The 2022 vintage left a lasting impression on me with its lusciously smooth mouthfeel and velvety tannins, while the higher percentage of Cabernet Franc added a refreshing freshness to the overall profile. The result is a vibrant and lively Saint-Émilion wine that truly stands out. This is undoubtedly one of my favorite Château Lassègue vintages in recent years.

Deep crimson. Touch flat. Carob. Black cherry, blackcurrant cacao aromas with nougat notes. Fleshy and sweet with chocolaty textures and fresh integrated acidity. (Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon 50-60% new oak).

Beautifully fresh aromatics, this is a big wine, full of depth and velvety plush texture, rich mouthfeel through the mid palate, with a mix of red and black fruits along with mandarin peel and pomegranate that add freshness. Careful precision, juicy expression of the fruit, this draws out through the palate with sappy tannins and a touch of astringency on the finish. The viticulture, as you would expect here, was precise and informed by their long experience in California, no trimming, with high canopy for the shading, with as little interference as possible (they say 'don't demand too much of the vine in these kind of vintages'). 38hl/h yields, helped by vines with an average age of 60 years, 65% new oak, 15 different forests, 24ha estate. No added acidity. 20th anniversary vintage of the Seillan and Jackson family at Lassegue, first year as Grand Cru Classé. 3.67ph, harvest 15 to October1. Nicolas Seillan now director.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2022 Lassegue opens with subtle notes of juicy red and black plums and mulberries before revealing a perfume of red roses, star anise, and dusty soil with a waft of powdered cinnamon. The medium to full-bodied palate has beautiful freshness and grace, with plush tannins and a spicy lift on the finish.

Flowers, cherries, herbs, licorice, mint, cocoa, and tobacco form the core of this medium-bodied, soft, forward, supple, elegant and vibrant wine, ending with sweet, red berries, spice, and spearmint. The wine will drink well, just about on release. Drink from 2026-2040.
