Larrivet Haut Brion rouge - Pessac-Léognan 2017

Larrivet Haut Brion, a new era for this iconic wine estate.

In 1987, the Gervoson family purchased Château Larrivet Haut Brion, an iconic wine estate in Pessac Leognan. At that time, the vineyard covered 17 hectares and the park surrounding the Château extended over 13 hectares. 35 years later, the family has succeeded in restoring not only the unity of the vineyard but also the prestige of this former "cru exceptionnel" from the Graves (Edition Ferret, 1898).

Today, the vines spread over 75 hectares including 61 hectares of red grape varieties. The 12-hectare park surrounding the Château has been preserved. It has become a haven of peace and biodiversity. The new technical team at the head of the estate includes Bruno Lemoine, Charlotte Mignon and François Godichon and performs very well. Here, every action is made to reveal the purest expression of the fruit: a precise viticulture, "Burgundy-style" vinifications and ageing containers testing (barrels, amphoras, wine globe...).

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 Larrivet Haut-Brion leaps with kirsch, warm blueberries and black plums plus wafts of earth, herbs and cedar and a touch of tar. Medium-bodied, the palate is fine, fresh and delicately expressive, finishing long and savory. Drinking Window : 2020 - 2034

The 2017 Larrivet Haut-Brion is a seriously impressive wine. Bold, rich and intense, the 2017 exudes tremendous depth and intensity. Following its bottling, the 2017 is very tannic and closed, but the depth and persistence it showed from bottle are still very much in evidence. The 2017 clearly needs time in bottle to be at its best, but it is still quite good. Readers should expect a wine of real energy and explosive power. Tasted two times.

Ripe and focused, featuring a beam of cassis, plum and blackberry paste flavors, infused with black tea notes and framed by licorice root and apple wood accents. The grippy finish lets in a sweet tobacco hint. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2022 through 2035. 5,416 cases made. — JM

This has quite a rich core of ripe dark-plum aromas and flavors. The dense, supple tannins are nicely cut. Drink or hold.

The red from this estate, which utilizes the consulting advice of Stéphane Derenoncourt, the 2017 Château Larrivet Haut-Brion is a promising wine from the Pessac-Léognan region and offers a beautiful floral bouquet of black cherries, plums, leafy underbrush, and violets. Medium-bodied, soft, with some elevated acidity and fine tannin, it’s a charming effort that should drink well for a decade or more.

Étonnant nez évoquant l’Alsace, avec une touche muscatée et botrytisée de beurre frais. Bouche riche et miellée, suave, style original.

The 2017 Larrivet Haut-Brion is magnificent. Frost took out a large portion of the château's parcels. As a result, the wine is a highly unusual blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Cabernet Franc and 5% Merlot. In the glass, the 2017 is rich, sumptuous and explosive, with serious density to match its flamboyant personality. A highly unusual wine, the 2017 has so much to offer. Wow! Now, for the bad news. Production is down 75%. Tasted two times.

Red fruits and flowers on the nose create an attractive perfume. On the palate, the wine is medium bodied, soft, earthy and bright. Give this merely a few years in the cellar to smooth out the edges.

The 2017 Larrivet Haut-Brion, picked 13 to 28 September with 13.6° alcohol, has a more intense bouquet than its peers with blackberry, wild strawberry and pencil lead. The palate is medium bodied and feels strict and linear in the mouth, almost Pauillac in style. There is plenty of freshness in situ although it feels serious and just needs more fruitétowards the finish. I appreciate the style of this Larrivet that may turn out to be one of the more cerebral wines from the appellation, though it is not necessarily one of its most exciting.

Deep garnet-purple, the 2017 Larrivet Haut-Brion opens with notes of mocha and damp soil over a core of crushed black cherries and fresh black plums plus a hint of raspberry leaves. Medium-bodied, firm and with a good core of earth-laced black fruits, it finishes a little chewy but with plenty of layered fruit length.

Firm, defined fruits and coffee notes are joined by lovely grippy tannins with a sense of bounce. This is slightly drying on the finish, but overall it has good depth and weight. Successful.

Ripe, juicy with plenty of black currant flavors, this wine has solid tannins as well. It has a good depth of flavor, its tannins well integrated into the juicy fruits. Drink from 2023.

A solid red with almost all cabernet sauvignon this year. Medium to full body, layered and intense. Shows length.

Pretty sanguine and tea notes lead off here, with silky textured damson plum and blackberry fruit following quickly behind. Lively anise and bramble hints emerge on the finish. This has range and character.—J.M.
