Langoa Barton - Saint-Julien 2023

The Barton dynasty, a fascinating story

What makes the history of the Barton family so fascinating is how each generation has left its mark and added its stone to this exceptional heritage.
Lilian Barton-Sartorius, the worthy successor of her father, Anthony Barton, now manages the three estates: Château Léoville Barton (2nd Grand Cru Classé in Saint-Julien), Langoa Barton (3ème Grand Cru Classé in Saint-Julien) and Mauvesin Barton (Moulis en Médoc). Her children, Mélanie and Damien, representing the 10th generation, are involved in the development of the family properties, thus keeping this remarkable legacy alive.

Château Langoa Barton, the first estate of the family

Saint Julien is where the roots and the heart of the Barton spirit can be felt.
The love story between the appellation and the Barton family began in 1821 when Hugh Barton purchased Château Langoa Barton. Since then, generation upon generation, the Barton family has been writting the chapters of this 3rd Grand Cru Classé in 1855.

The vines that make up the Château Langoa Barton terroir overlook the river and thus benefit from the natural protection of this thermal regulator. The mild temperatures due to this proximity imply early ripening, which is often a sign of good quality. The 20 hectares (49 acres) of Château Langoa Barton are planted on a magnificent outcrop of quaternary gravel lying on clay subsoil. This terroir gives pride of place to Cabernet-Sauvignon, along with Merlot and Cabernet franc.

The 2023 Langoa Barton has a clean, well-defined, almost understated bouquet with blackberry, black plum and raspberry fruit, quite open and expressive. The palate is medium-bodied with finely wound tannins, graceful with ample weight on the mid-palate. No fireworks nor ostentation, lightly spiced with a cohesive finish, this Langoa Barton will age gracefully in bottle.

Fresh and juicy, showing precise cherries, berries, minerals and licorice. Good midpalate tension, with medium to full body and a pristine finish. Not a dense vintage, but there is a lot to like here, particularly if you enjoy Bordeaux with brightness, elegance and finesse. Quite long and taut too. A blend of 60% cabernet sauvignon, 37% merlot and 3% cabernet franc. Drink or hold.

The 2023 Château Langoa Barton checks in as 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, and 3% Cabernet Franc that's resting in 60% new French oak. It hit 13% alcohol and has a deep purple hue as well as impressive notes of black cherries, darker currants, graphite, and spring flowers. It's balanced, medium-bodied, has bright acidity, and ripe, focusing tannins. It's clearly an outstanding wine, but it’s going to need time. Tasted twice with consistent notes.

Blackberries, cigar wrapper, flowers, and cherries fill the nose with its aromatic profile. On the palate, the wine is fresh, chewy, and Cassis, tobacco, flowers, blackberries, and red currants show easily on the nose, and palate. There is a wealth of fresh, dark red fruits, creamy tannins, and infused with tobacco, powerful tannins, and a gentle, crispness to the spicy, blackberries on the mid-palate, and in the finish. The wine blends 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, and 3% Cabernet Franc. 13% ABV. Drink from 2028-2050. 92-94 Pts.

Solid tannins, gorgeous iris and violet reflections, blueberry and cassis fruits, shot through with cigar box, this is a fairly old school Langoa in the best possibly way, juicy, sapppy, nuanced, with chalky tannins that lift through the palate.

The 2023 Langoa Barton is packed with dark red cherry, plum, spice, cedar and tobacco. Over the last few years, an updated style of vinification in a new cellar has yielded a bit more mid-palate sweetness, pliancy and resonance than in the past. It will be interesting to see where this goes, but clearly, we have entered into an era of Langoa. Tasted two times.

The 2023 Langoa Barton was picked from September 12 until October 2 at around 50hL/ha, with some "late" saignée for half the vat–when it has some “serious color,” according to Damien Barton. Two vats were chaptalized out of a total of 42, the highest at 15%, yielding an average alcohol of 13%. Matured in 60% new oak, it has a very perfumed bouquet with black plum, boysenberry and a touch of mint. This is notably forward and unabashed. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, a sorbet-fresh Langoa with a bright, almost pastille-like finish that lingers in the mouth. Very seductive and vivacious, I appreciate the nascent energy here.

Deep dark ruby, opaque core, purple reflections. Delicate notes of plums, dark forest berries, a hint of cassis, fine tobacco nuances. Medium body, red currants, fine tan- nins, somewhat slender in the finish, offers uncomplicated drinking pleasure.

The 2023 Langoa Barton is a very accomplished wine, the family's new winery having permitted more precise, parcel-by-parcel winemaking as well as gentler handling of the fruit to deliver a wine with all this estate's customary intensity of flavor but more polish and refinement. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of dark berries, cassis and plums mingled with hints of pencil shavings and dried rose petals, it's medium to full-bodied, with an inky core of fruit, vibrant acids and plenty of suave structuring tannin. This classic blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc is sure to number among the intelligent purchases of the en primeur campaign.

There’s depth of fruit here with blackberries, blackcurrants and hints of cedar and tobacco. The tannins are very solid and polished with juiciness and depth. Pristine. Bright acidity. 60% cabernet sauvignon, 37% merlot and 3% cabernet franc.
