The 2005 Langoa Barton is a wonderful surprise. Bright, fresh and so alluring, the 2005 is one of the under the radar jewels of the year. Freshly cut flowers, ripe red berry fruit, mint and blood orange give the 2005 striking aromatic lift and energy to match its mid-weight personality. This classy, polished Saint-Julien is a total delight. I wish I had a case in the cellar.

The 2005 Langoa Barton is tannic, leathery and spicy, with a dense ruby/purple color, excruciatingly high tannin, medium body, and good ripeness, but the tannins are questionable and the overall balance possibly suspect. We’ll see what age does, but after ten years, this remains a hard, angular and austere wine.(86+)

Mid crimson. Markedly fragrant, even almost floral. Mid weight with some sweetness. Lots of acidity. Still quite tense and taut. Drying finish.  13% Drink 2020-2036(16.5++)

Le charme opère. Ce saint-julien révèle beaucoup de douceur en bouche, avec des tanins à la fois fins et fondus, malgré une petite touche d'élevage. A ouvrir sans se presser.

Tasted single blind at Southwold. This demonstrates a lot of extraction and ripeness on the nose with blackberry and mulberry fruit. Nicely interwoven new oak. On the palate there is a fleshy, supple entry, very rounded and extrovert, although lacking the same sense of tension and finesse as others. Chewy tannins, backwards - this warrants further ageing. Drink 2014-2030. Tasted January 2009.

Good ruby-red. Rich plummy aroma. Deep and chewy if a bit youthfully sullen, with sweet flavors of redcurrant, mocha and tobacco. Finishes with chewy tannins. Distinctly fatter than the 2006 but a bit less chocolatey and dark in its flavor presentation.

This primordial-styled, incredibly tannic St.-Julien reveals a dense purple color along with aromas of roasted meats, tapenade, cassis, melted licorice, and chocolate. Following the promising aromatic display, the wine shuts down in the mouth, revealing only excruciating tannin and good acidity. It will not be ready to drink for at least 15 years. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2040.

Intense, Ribena-like blackcurrant fruit on the nose, more subtle on the palate. Tannins already quite soft and rounded. Classic Saint-Julien balance. Velvety opulence on nose followed up by pretty tight, strict palate. Quite fine boned - the tannins especially fine. 17+

While nearly medieval in its backwardness, this pure, tannic, medium-bodied, rich St.-Julien exhibits plenty of creme de cassis, espresso roast, smoked herbs, and spice notes. It requires 8-10 years of cellaring and should keep for 25 years.

A behemoth possessing huge tannin, density, and extract as well as mouth-searing levels of firepower, this inky/purple-tinged St.-Julien is a classic vin de garde offering notes of high class tobacco smoke, cedar, black currants, incense, and subtle wood. Potential purchasers over the age of 50 may want to reconsider, as this wine will require a decade of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2035.

Gorgeous blackberry, currants and light toasted oak. Exotic. Full-bodied, juicy and velvety, with loads of fruit. Long and delicious. Almost 95-100. Great value. —J.S.
