La Lagune (BIO-ORGANIC) - Haut-Médoc 2021

120 bts max per order

The Frey family has owned Chateau La Lagune for 20 years. The Lagune estate is a Haut Medoc Troisieme Grand Cru Classe (Classification of 1855) that was, from 1962 to 2000, the property of Champagne Ayala House. Chateau La Lagune is located 10 km North of Bordeaux (Left bank of the Garonne), near Chateau Cantemerle. 6,700 vine stocks/Ha grow on a 81-hectare vineyard, on a knoll composed of very fine gravel (called "Mindel"). Certified organic in 2016, La Lagune vineyard is made up of Cabernet Sauvignon (60%), Merlot (30%), and Petit Verdot (10%), with vines of about 35 years old.

An intense vintage that ends with great potential
The 2021 vintage will remain marked by its freshness and humidity. Observations, hard work, and patience have enabled us to harvest grapes at good maturity in order to obtain wines that permit us to predict a vintage of good quality and long aging potential.

The 2021 La Lagune is a bold, expressive wine. Macerated dark cherry, tobacco, gravel, incense, cured meats, licorice and worn-in leather give the 2021 notable complexity. A wine of gravitas and brooding depth, this La Lagune is impeccably done. Very fine

The 2021 La Lagune has turned out nicely in bottle, unwinding in the glass with aromas of dark berries, cherries, spices and truffles, followed by a medium to full-bodied, velvety and seamless palate with good depth of fruit, lively acids and sweet tannins.

This is showing aromas of black currants, dried herbs, paprika, orange zest and tobacco leaves. It’s medium-bodied with fine-grained, polished tannins. Silky, elegant and long. 70% cabernet sauvignon, 20% merlot and 10% petit verdot. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink after 2024.

I tasted 2021 La Lagune alongside the 2019 and 2020 vintages, and it is clear that 2021 is a worthy team member in this pack. While the 2019 shows discreet power and 2020 parades alluring glossiness, 2021 leads with its refined perfume and incredibly refreshing and shiny (but not glossy), silky (but not velvety) fruit. Every element in this wine is refined, and the elusive, green, floral hints (see my note on Château Margaux) that I prize so much in 2021 are also present in this fabulous wine. The 10% addition of Petit Verdot does a superb job of linking the distinguished Cabernet to the textural Merlot making this an exquisite wine with more restraint and composure than many. When I think of La Lagune, I think of balance and calm, and in 2021 these ingredients are augmented with magnificent Cabernet resonance, making it a compelling creation. 18

The 2021 Château La Lagune is rock-solid, with considerable finesse and elegance as well as medium body, silky, polished tannins, and classic notes of both red and black fruits as well as spicy wood and tobacco. My money is on this ending up being an outstanding wine, and it should have 15+ years of prime drinking. 88-90+

Nez précis, plutôt floral, corps bien équilibré, texture noble de cabernet-sauvignon, tannins classiques. Le plus complexe et le plus élégant des crus classés de son appellation, comme il se doit. Échantillons très bien tirés.

Deep crimson. Classical blackcurrant cedar aromas with wax polish, chinotto notes. Well balanced cassis, dark cherry fruits, fine velvet/ cedar tannins and toasty notes. Finishes cedary firm. Very good mid-palate buoyancy and freshness. Blend is approximately 60% cabernet sauvignon, 30% merlot, 10% petit verdot. Around 18 months in 50% new oak. 13% alc

La Lagune 2021 is very gentle at first but finishes with slightly searing alcohol. The grapes are well matured, with relatively ripe aromas of berry fruits and graphite. Facing the sunlight-deprived 2021, La Lagune has blended 70% of Cabernet Sauvignon in the wine and adopted a more rigorous selection (40% of total production for its first label) to seek concentration. Considering 2021 is its first vintage fully adopting the biodynamic (and is also the first Biodyvin Grand Cru Classé in Médoc), I think it deserves the credit for maintaining such balance in 2021. The 2021 La Lagune was picked from September 23 until October 12, from a biodynamically run vineyard due for certification in 2023, and matured in 50% new oak. It suffered a little frost damage at the beginning of the season but very little mildew. The Cabernet was deleafed and yields controlled (30hL/ha) in order to achieve ripeness. This has plenty of brambly red berry fruit on the nose, along with wild strawberry and tayberry; sous-bois and freshly rolled tobacco scents unfold with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly austere opening, modest depth, noticeable acidity and peppery red fruit toward the finish, which leaves a residual bitterness on the aftertaste. Maybe a little rustic after preceding vintages, this will just need to fill out during élevage.

The 2021 La Lagune is a gorgeous, super-expressive wine. The aromatics alone are beguiling. Deep and beautifully layered in the glass, with striking layers of nuance, the 2021 is a knock-out. It should age gracefully for many years to come. (90-92)+

A pretty middle-weight, the 2021 La Lagune offers up inviting aromas of sweet berries and plums mingled with hints of licorice, loamy soil, raw cocoa and cigar wrapper. Medium-bodied, ample and succulent, it's fleshy and seamless, with an ample core of fruit, bright acids and melting tannins. A blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot, it checks in at a modest 12.5% alcohol. Tasted four times, twice at the château.
