Labégorce - Margaux 2023

Château Labégorce, a wine of passion

Château Labégorce is a place of heart where great wines have been produced for centuries. It is a place where one appreciates others' tastes—a wine that brings people together. For the Perrodo family, it has been a home for creating memories, laughter, bike rides, and polo matches for the past 30 years.

The encounter between the historical terroir of Margaux, whose origins date back to 1332, and the visionary patriarch, Hubert Perrodo, has elevated the vineyard to a high level of quality and, above all, restored Labégorce's lost harmony. Two hundred years after the property was divided into three parts (Labégorce Margaux, Labégorce Zédé, and L'abbé Gorsse de Gorsse), he succeeded in the audacious feat of bringing them back together.

Today his daughter, Nathalie Perrodo Samani, bears the responsibility for this estate, often likened to a classified growth due to the quality of its wines and its illustrious neighbors (Châteaux Margaux, Lascombes, Malescot, Marquis d'Alesme).

The 2023 Labégorce has a well-defined bouquet with vivacious redcurrant, strawberry and violet scents that could only come from Margaux. The oak is neatly integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with smooth tannins, well-judged acidity that lends just the right amount of tension. Lightly spiced on the finish that lingers in the mouth with pleasing saline notes on the aftertaste. This should age well in bottle.

Berries, plums, cassis, minerals and hints of roasted spices, white pepper and paprika on the nose. Medium- to full-bodied and fine-boned, with juicy red berries and an evenly packed finish. Long, structured and quite poised. Drink from 2028.

Based on close to an even split of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, the 2023 Château Labégorce has a spicy, medium-bodied, supple, complex profile that's almost already hard to resist. Ripe red and black fruits, loamy earth, and savory herb notes define the aromatics, and it has nicely integrated background oak, good mid-palate density, and outstanding length. Tasted twice with consistent notes.

On the nose, you find flowers, cherries, blackberries, herbs, and plums. The palate serves up its blend of silky, spicy, creamy red, and chewy black fruits. There is good length and energy here that carries through to the mint-tinted finish. The wine blends 47% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, and 3% Cabernet Franc. 13.5% ABV, pH 3.7. The harvest took place September 13 - October 9. Drink from 2028-2050. 92-94 Pts.

Subdued on the first nose, again showing that parts of Margaux need a little bit of coaxing in this vintage to open up at this early stage. When it does, you find sculpted and deliciously spicy fruit, rose petals, cocoa bean and cassis, with tannic grip that slowly builds though the palate. 32hl/h yield, 62.5ha in production, 25% new oak barrels for ageing, with the rest one year old. Marjolaine de Coninck technical director, Nathalie Perrodo owner.

The 2023 Labégorce is a bold, authoritative wine. Black cherry, plum, chocolate, licorice, mocha and leather infuse the 2023 with tons of character. An exuberant, flashy Margaux, Labegorce has plenty to offer in 2023.

The 2023 Labégorce has a well-defined nose that leans slightly more toward red than black fruit. It's understated at first but soon coheres and gains intensity. The palate is medium-bodied with very pliant tannins. Satin-like in texture and very cohesive, with a touch of spice on the finish, this is a classy Margaux that will give a great deal of pleasure over the next 15 to 20 years. Warning through: it will be difficult to resist in its youth.

Strong ruby colour, purple reflections. Fine cherry fruit, greengage, hints of man- darin zest, still a little shy. Slender, red cherries, subtle fruit, ripe tannins, remains persistent, a lively food wine with good provenance, has certain ageing potential.

Notes of ripe and mellow dark berries here with a hint of orange peel. It’s medium-bodied, supple and polished.
