Jim Barry, The Florita "Cellar Release" - Clare Valley 2015
Jim Barry, The Florita
Three generations of Barry family winemakers have shaped Jim Barry Wines into the benchmark Australian winery that it is today. Founded by industry pioneer, Jim Barry and his wife Nancy in1959 and located in South Australia’s Clare Valley, this family owned and operated winery produces premium, quality wines that express a sense of place.
The Florita vineyard is an icon of Australian wine history, renowned as one of the finest vineyard sites in the country. Planted in 1946 and redefined in the 1960s, it became legendary as the source of John Vickery’s acclaimed Leo Buring Rieslings – wines celebrated for their purity, precision, and remarkable ageing potential. These rieslings set new standards for Clare Valley wine, winning hearts with their youthful delicacy, and evolving into masterpieces of complexity and richness over time. Wine author Dr. Max Lake once hailed Florita as one of Australia’s greatest vineyards, a reputation it holds to this day. After decades of anonymity, Florita rose again under the custodianship of the Barry family, who acquired the site in 1986 and launched The Florita Riesling in 2004. Paying homage to its extraordinary legacy, this wine embodies the vineyard’s unique terroir and the Clare Valley’s enduring excellence in riesling production. The Florita Riesling – planted in 1962 – represents the finest parcels of this 80-acre vineyard. At an elevation of 398 metres, the well-exposed and ventilated vines thrive on loamy soils over calcareous siltstones, with deep roots contributing to the wine’s hallmark nervosity and mineral character.
The 2015 vintage
Tasting notes
Time in bottle has allowed this wine to develop baked lime, ginger, lime pie, and toffee apple aromas. The palate is ripe and lush with flavours of red apple, stone fruit, apple skin, and dried mango.
A nice line of acid keeps this wine energetic. At an excellent stage for drinking now, but the 2015 The Florita Riesling Cellar Release will continue to develop for many years to come.
