Jim Barry, The Florita "Cellar Release" - Clare Valley 2015

Jim Barry, The Florita

Three generations of Barry family winemakers have shaped Jim Barry Wines into the benchmark Australian winery that it is today. Founded by industry pioneer, Jim Barry and his wife Nancy in1959 and located in South Australia’s Clare Valley, this family owned and operated winery produces premium, quality wines that express a sense of place.

The Florita vineyard is an icon of Australian wine history, renowned as one of the finest vineyard sites in the country. Planted in 1946 and redefined in the 1960s, it became legendary as the source of John Vickery’s acclaimed Leo Buring Rieslings – wines celebrated for their purity, precision, and remarkable ageing potential. These rieslings set new standards for Clare Valley wine, winning hearts with their youthful delicacy, and evolving into masterpieces of complexity and richness over time. Wine author Dr. Max Lake once hailed Florita as one of Australia’s greatest vineyards, a reputation it holds to this day. After decades of anonymity, Florita rose again under the custodianship of the Barry family, who acquired the site in 1986 and launched The Florita Riesling in 2004. Paying homage to its extraordinary legacy, this wine embodies the vineyard’s unique terroir and the Clare Valley’s enduring excellence in riesling production. The Florita Riesling – planted in 1962 – represents the finest parcels of this 80-acre vineyard. At an elevation of 398 metres, the well-exposed and ventilated vines thrive on loamy soils over calcareous siltstones, with deep roots contributing to the wine’s hallmark nervosity and mineral character.

The 2015 vintage

Tasting notes

Time in bottle has allowed this wine to develop baked lime, ginger, lime pie, and toffee apple aromas. The palate is ripe and lush with flavours of red apple, stone fruit, apple skin, and dried mango.

A nice line of acid keeps this wine energetic. At an excellent stage for drinking now, but the 2015 The Florita Riesling Cellar Release will continue to develop for many years to come.

There really is no point in my typing another note on this wine, having gone wild about it many times before.  But what I love about The Florita joining La Pace is that the vintage to start this particular ball rolling is ten years old and is drinking perfectly.  I hope that this route to market pays dividends for all the greatest wines, but I want The Florita to make the most memorable mark of all, not least because it hails from my favourite Riesling vineyard in the Southern Hemisphere!

(Clare Valley; 100% Riesling; 12.3% alcohol; just 300 bottles). Brilliantly glassy and crystalline. Gracious. Fluid, lithe and surprisingly crunchy in its fruit signature. Viscous at the top of the palate, but the acidity almost breaks this up from below releasing the petrol-y notes as the citrus engages. Dynamic and energetic as great Riesling should be. Fabulously fresh on the finish

The 2015 Riesling The Florita Cellar Release now offers a compelling blend of preserved lemon and orange peel with touches of hay and honey. Its punchy acidity remains untamed and drives the long, fine finish.

Salty, ocean spray meets petrol with gunsmoke, peach, lemon zest and saffron. Filling and round - the texture hits first before electric acidity livens the palate and makes this such a delight to drink. Thick and glossy but with threads of salinity, bitter citrus fruit and flesh. Waxy, mineral and super long. Hitting the 10 year mark right now this seems like it's just beginning to reveal it's true beauty. I adore the razor sharp edges that linger on the finish. Incredible. 2.9pH.

If you follow my notes, you will know that this is a Riesling that always has a place in my fridge. Just has so much character and punch. Juicy, slate strewn, green apple, gunsmoke, drawn out character, with focus and personality. Sam Barry winemaker.

Juicy lime, peach and Asian pear flavors are fresh and tart from the intense acidity, with beeswax, lemon thyme and mineral notes that add savory detail. Gains momentum on the long, expressive finish. Drink now. 100 cases imported.

The 2015 The Florita Riesling is today 10 years from harvest, and the wine has gained only a modicum of color in the glass over the past decade. On the nose, layers of cold buttered toast, scratched citrus, sea salt flakes, saffron and even hints of something fleshy, like peach. This is not to indicate ripeness or texture, merely to illustrate the spectrum of flavors inherent in each sip. The length is enormous, and honestly, one wonders why we drink Riesling on release, when we could cellar it and have this experience. Better yet, wineries could hold it back for us, the drinkers, as Jim Barry has done here. This is a superlative wine, and it is still on the up. 12.3% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

Complex aromas of gunsmoke, struck match, preserved lemons and lime leaves. The medium-bodied palate has a nice phenolic edge and bright acidity with a mouthwatering mineral finish. Held back for 10 years for a late cellar release. Though still very youthful, it has evolved nicely in bottle. Drink or hold. Screw cap.
