Haut Marbuzet - Saint-Estèphe 2021

The estate

Château Haut-Marbuzet is one of the oldest estates in Saint-Estèphe, located on the left bank of the Gironde. Its vineyard is perfectly exposed and spreads over slopes of gravel mixed with clay and limestone.

Henri Duboscq, with more than 50 vintages to his credit, has made Haut-Marbuzet what it has become, devoting all his time and energy to give the wine its greatness. The property was even promoted to Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel in 2003. Today, his sons Hugues and Bruno, accompanied by their father, perpetuate this family adventure of passion and precursors.

The 2021 Haut-Marbuzet has gained some exuberance since I tasted the barrel sample. Today it’s very pure and quite seductive, with black cherry and blueberry fruit and hints of vanilla pod emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy, ripe

The 2021 Haut-Marbuzet has turned out nicely, wafting from the glass with aromas of dark berries, cigar wrapper and vanilla pod, followed by a medium to full-bodied, fleshy palate that's suave and layered, with a succulent core of fruit framed by powdery tannins. It will offer a broad, charming drinking window.

Red currants, iron, white pepper and orange zest dotted with fine sweet spices and a touch of chili chocolate. Tight and fine-grained on the palate with medium to full body and a tight, juicy finish. Lovely tannin integrity and minerality extend to a lengthy, compact finish. An excellent St.-Estephe from this vintage that outperforms many. Drinkable now, but better from 2026.

The Haut-Marbuzet 2021 has diverted from its authentic richness and intensity, and adopted a sense of elegance. An experiment that yields touching results. In this wine, one will find a gentler roasted scent from new oaks and more pronounced juicy berries on the nose. A presentation delivers some sharper lines and brighter contours. Taking the previous three vintages into consideration, I would say the Haut-Marbuzet 2021 is by no means an inferior. ??“????”?Haut-Marbuzet??2021??????????,???,?????????????????????,????????????,????,????????????????????????????,???2021???Haut-Marbuzet?????

Round, polished, fruity and forward, the soft, smoky, dark red fruits with their espresso tinted accent are going to be easy to enjoy on release and over the next decade or so. Drink from 2023-2034. 90-92

The 2021 Haut-Marbuzet has a well-defined nose that (unsurprisingly) feels much less exuberant than the previous three vintages. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, a dash of white pepper sprinkled over the black fruit, and a slightly austere, tobacco-driven finish. Perhaps an atypical Haut-Marbuzet at this stage, though I suspect it will coalesce during élevage.

The 2021 Haut-Marbuzet is another fabulous wine from the Duboscq family. Potent and layered, with terrific precision, Haut-Marbuzet is loaded with personality. Red-fleshed fruit, blood orange, hard candy, mint and rose petal come alive in the glass. The 2021 possesses striking inner sweetness and terrific balance. I loved it.

Bravo !

The 2021 Haut-Marbuzet shows considerable promise, exhibiting aromas of sweet blackberries, plums and cherries mingled with notions of loamy soil and spicy new oak. Medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with lively acids, ripe tannins and a supple, sumptuous profile, it's a terrific performance for this Saint-Estèphe estate.

Minty bramble bushes on the nose, with some liquorice touches too. I like the dark, sweetly sticky style with chewy tannins though they do have a cool blue fruit and graphite edge which brings the freshness and minerality to the fore. Feels sleek and suave still with some succulence and grip to the plush but finessed fruit. I like this a lot. 5% Petit Verdot completes the blend.
