Haut Bailly II - Pessac-Léognan 2019

Haut-Bailly, a promise of elegance and authenticity

Haut Bailly is one of those properties whose mere mention evokes emotions and memories of shared moments. Here, balance is found in all things—a harmony between Nature, Humanity, and the Soul of the place.
In 1998, the Wilmers family acquired this historic Cru Classé from the Sanders family. At that time, they made the enlightened decision to appoint Véronique Sanders, the third generation of the family, as its director. As the guardian of the soul of this place, her mission is to restore its former radiance while preserving its identity and style. To speak of Haut Bailly is to speak of a centuries-old history, a legendary terroir, a collective endeavor, a property in motion, and above all, a signature. The style is inherently timeless, and that of Haut Bailly has always been a promise of elegance and authenticity.

Haut-Bailly•II, a true reflection of the grand vin

It is the result of a strict selection and it shares from its elder brother the style, purity, and precision from a young age. As a model of a second wine, it also represents the symbol of the second generation of the Wilmers family, who are writing a new chapter of Haut-Bailly. Its modernized label draws upon its heritage by reintroducing the emblem that was present on Haut-Bailly labels until 1985. The red color, matching the capsule, brings energy and discreet elegance. This 'N°II' provides immediate pleasure while possessing excellent aging potential. The selected lots chosen for its blend bestow upon it a delicate and smooth structure.

Pine, currant and crushed-stone aromas with some walnuts, berries and orange peel. Full-bodied with round, fine tannins and excellent length. Compact and very fine. Lovely length. Seamless. 60% merlot and 40% cabernet sauvignon. Try from 2025.

The second wine of this incredible château in the Pessac-Léognan appellation, the 2019 Haut-Bailly II has a classic Graves scorched earth character as well as pure red and black fruits, tobacco, and cedary herb-like aromas and flavors. Round, plush, and sexy on the palate, it does everything you would want from a second wine and will drink nicely for 10-15 years.

The 2019 Haut-Bailly II exhibits aromas of rich berry fruit, cassis, cigar wrapper and loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and polished, with a ripe core of fruit and plenty of rich, powdery tannin, it's a Merlot-dominated blend that was composed at the moment of assemblage (as opposed to a selection of dedicated plots).

The 2019 Haut-Bailly II is much more elegant and nuanced than it was from barrel, always a great thing to see. Silky tannins wrap around a core of bright red berry, spice, tobacco, cedar and mint in this gracious, mid-weight second wine from the estate. The 2019 will surely improve in bottle, but it is pretty enticing today.

The 2019 Haut-Bailly II, the second wine of Haut-Bailly, has accentuated the sous-bois elements on the nose since bottling, now feeling quintessentially Pessac-Léognan and quite marine-influenced in style. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, taut and fresh, still a little piquant on the finish but with more precision than I recall. This is very impressive. Excellent.

Composed of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 60% Merlot, the 2019 Haut-Bailly II was harvested from the 23rd of September to the 10th of October. Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the nose is already wonderfully forward and harmonious, featuring bright black cherries, blackberry preserves and wild blueberries scents plus suggestions of lavender, tilled soil and unsmoked cigars. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has a solid foundation of chewy tannins and oodles of freshness backing up the muscular, mouth-coating black and blue fruits, finishing fruity.

Beautiful aromas of sweet tobacco, chocolate and spice follow through to a medium body with sweet tannins and a round, creamy texture. Lovely now. Structured, yet juicy.

The 2019 Haut-Bailly II is a very serious second wine. Big, potent tannis give the 2019 much of its somber, brooding personality. Black cherry, graphite, licorice, cloves and new leather infuse the 2019 with tremendous complexity. Readers should be prepared to cellar the 2019 for at least a few years. If this tasting is any indication, it is a real powerhouse with quite a bit of cellaring potential.

The second wine of Château Haut-Bailly and based largely on Merlot, the 2019 Château Haut-Bailly II is a soft, seductive Graves with beautiful blue and black fruit as well as notes of chocolate, tobacco, and damp earth. Medium to full-bodied, with delicious fruit and silky tannins, drink it on release and over the following 10-15 years.

The 2019 Haut-Bailly II, formerly La Parde de Haut-Bailly, was picked from 23 September to 10 October. This bursts from the glass with crushed strawberry, dark cherries, vanilla and light sous-bois aromas - utterly charming. The palate is medium-bodied with finely-chiseled tannins, a keen line of acidity, precise and vibrant with just a touch of piquancy on the finish. This is an absolutely delightful second label that comes highly recommended.

Earthy with a smoke, cigar, cocoa and red berry nose, the wine is elegant, soft, medium-bodied and forward. The tannins are silky, the fruit is fresh and this will drink well right out of the gate. What more could you ask for from this blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon? 90-92 Pts
