Larrivet Haut Brion rouge - Pessac-Léognan 2019

Larrivet Haut Brion, a new era for this iconic wine estate.

In 1987, the Gervoson family purchased Château Larrivet Haut Brion, an iconic wine estate in Pessac Leognan. At that time, the vineyard covered 17 hectares and the park surrounding the Château extended over 13 hectares. 35 years later, the family has succeeded in restoring not only the unity of the vineyard but also the prestige of this former "cru exceptionnel" from the Graves (Edition Ferret, 1898).

Today, the vines spread over 75 hectares including 61 hectares of red grape varieties. The 12-hectare park surrounding the Château has been preserved. It has become a haven of peace and biodiversity. The new technical team at the head of the estate includes Bruno Lemoine, Charlotte Mignon and François Godichon and performs very well. Here, every action is made to reveal the purest expression of the fruit: a precise viticulture, "Burgundy-style" vinifications and ageing containers testing (barrels, amphoras, wine globe...).

The aroma is pretty ripe, delivering sweet mulberry, black plum, and some distinctive spicy notes. The polished tannins embrace the creamy body, creating a cheerful and pleasant atmosphere on the palate ???????,??????????????????????????????????????????????,???????????

Black fruit, cherry stones, tar, walnut husk and undergrowth on the nose. It’s medium-to full-bodied with firm, finely knit tannins. Layered and polished with a firm, mineral finish. Try after 2024.

Moving to the red, the 2019 Château Larrivet Haut-Brion is a rich, broad, mouth-filling, spicy, complex and full-bodied style that has loads to love. Giving up lots of mulled red and black fruits as well as tobacco leaf, loamy soil, and chocolaty nuances, I love its balance, it has ripe tannins, and it will drink nicely for 25 to 20 years.

Generous and fleshy, the 2019 Malartic Lagravière bursts with aromas of smoky blackberries, plums, forest floor and spices. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, rich and muscular, with ripe acids and a generously extracted, chewy profile. This will need a bit of time to round out in bottle. 90+

The 2019 Larrivet Haut-Brion is terrific. Dark, fleshy and resonant in the glass. Wild cherry, tobacco, incense, leather, smoke and game all take shape in this potent wine. Franc top notes lend quite a bit of aromatic presence, but then again, Cabernet Sauvignon and Franc make up most of the blend. Once again, Larrivet Haut-Brion is a classy, under the radar gem. Tasted two times.

The 2019 Larrivet Haut-Brion has an intriguing, well-defined nose of more red than black fruit, touches of camphor and blood orange percolating through. The palate is well-balanced and poised, with ripe blackberry and raspberry fruit and a slightly granular texture. The cohesive finish maybe does not quite have the panache of, say, the Carbonnieux. Still, this is very fine and should give 25–30 years of drinking pleasure.

An appealing sweetness on the nose alongside touches of blackcurrant leaf. This is lovely, a dark and cool style focussed on liquorice and clove flavours backed by a core of blue fruits - blueberries, cherries and plums. You can feel some tension to this too, layers of fruit are elegantly presented but with energy and a deep mid palate. Tannins are fine and soft, gently supporting the fruit which is almost in the background at this point. A touch of austere dryness towards the finish while the spiced elements take over. Needs time to come together more but this has lots of delicious aspects. A soft stoniness lingers in the background giving a dry, wet stone texture and almost spicy, mineral edge overall. Good quality, I like this a lot.

Opaque purple-black colored, the 2019 Larrivet Haut-Brion charges out of the gate with wonderfully fragrant scents of black raspberries, Morello cherries and wild blueberries with suggestions of blackcurrant pastilles, candied violets, chocolate mint and forest floor. The medium to full-bodied palate is jam-packed with red and black fruit layers, framed by firm, exquisitely ripe, velvety tannins and bold freshness, finishing long and fragrant. Just stunning!

The 2019 Larrivet Haut-Brion is laced with a whole range of dark red cherry, lavender, gravel, rose petal, blood orange, mint and sweet spice nuances. Deep and persistent, with fabulous balance, the 2019 has so much to recommend it. One of the signatures of Larrivet Haut-Brion is a relatively high percentage of Cabernet Franc, and the Franc character really comes through. It will be fascinating to see how things evolve as the property transitions to sustainable farming. Tasted two times.

The 2019 Larrivet Haut-Brion has a succulent bouquet with very pure black cherries, raspberry and blood orange scents billowing from the glass. The oak is seamlessly integrated in this Pessac-Léognan. The palate is finely proportioned with saturated tannins, well judged acidity, fleshy black plum and boysenberry fruit with a pinch of sea salt towards the finish. What a lovely, seductive Larrivet has created in 2019. Possibly earlier drinking than some of its peers.

A full-bodied red with chewy tannins that nicely frame a full body with lots of fruit, tobacco and wet-earth character. Flavorful finish.
