Gurgue (la) (BIO-ORGANIC) - Margaux 2021

Gonzague & Claire Lurton Estates, a family history

Claire Villars Lurton and Gonzague Lurton both come from great Bordeaux winegrowing families: the Merlaut family and the Lurton family. In the early 90's, at the age of 32 and 26, these two forces of nature proudly took over their family estates: Château Durfort Vivens, 2nd Grand Cru Classé in 1855 in Margaux, Château Ferrière, 3rd Grand Cru Classé in 1855 in Margaux, Château Haut-Bages Libéral, 5th Grand Cru Classé in 1855 in Pauillac and Château La Gurgue in Margaux.

In the Bordeaux world of Grands Crus Classés, Claire and Gonzague are pioneers in organic farming, biodynamics and now in agroecology and agroforestry. Convinced that the vines can become resilient and autonomous through a meticulous respect for nature and driven by the desire to pass on a healthy vineyard to their children, their vineyards were among the first to be dualy certified in organic and biodynamic farming and represent today the largest biodynamically cultivated area in the region.
Claire and Gonzague are among those people who are driven by their passion, faithful to their deepest values, like true agricultural explorers always searching new practices, adapted to their lands, allowing them to reveal their terroir and to produce living wines; in the end, to produce Great Wines that matter.

Château La Gurgue, the beauty of Margaux's terroirs

Château La Gurgue was acquired by the Merlaut family in 1978. In 1992, Claire Villars Lurton took over the management of the estate after her mother, Bernadette Merlaut Villars, passed away. She is the third generation of woman to manage this estate. She has been carrying on her mother's work by finding the style of the wine of La Gurgue: seductive, true, sincere.

Its 10-hectare vineyard is located in the heart of the Margaux appellation and is contiguous to the vines of Château Margaux. According to the famous Férèt guide, its plots are located on the most beautiful hillside of Margaux and historically come from three Grands Crus Classés (Malescot St Exupéry, Lascombes and Rauzan Gassies). Its soils are made of deep gravel on limestone marl.

The estate is certified in Organic Farming since 2016 and dualy certified in Biodynamics by Demeter and Biodyvin since 2018. These new practices respectful of nature and its ecosystem, combined with the infrastructure and know-how of the Château Ferrière teams from which the estate benefits, have revealed the beauty of the terroirs of Château La Gurgue.

Containing an unusually high 19% Petit Verdot, the 2021 La Gurgue offers up aromas of dark berries, cherries, iris and paraffin wax, followed by a medium to full-bodied, rich and fleshy palate that's supple and giving, built around powdery structuring tannins.

The concentration of La Gurgue 2021 makes me wonder what makes it so compact and powerful in this cool vintage? The answer possibly lies in the 19% Petit Verdot blend, which should be the highest proportion in the history of La Gurgue as far as I remember. The spicy notes of Petit Verdot combine with the high acidity create a very lively tasting experience. With finer tannins on the finish, this wine will stand out more prominently. A bit of spice, flowers and red fruits on the nose. The medium-bodied wine is bright, fresh and crisp, with a cranberry, red currant and orange flavored mid-palate and old-school, classic finish. The wine is worth tasting as here you have an estate that goes their own way, using no oak during the aging process. Drink from 2023-2029. 86-88

The 2021 La Gurgue, which contains 19% Petit Verdot from a massal selection, is aged in 60% barrels and 40% ovoid vats for a planned 12 months. The estate is are now eschewing used oak and aging in concrete eggs/vats instead. This has a fragrant, precise bouquet of blackberry, blue fruit and a touch of crushed stone. The palate is medium-bodied with chalky tannins, fine depth and gentle grip on the tobacco-tinged finish. Very classic in style.

The 2021 La Gurgue is a deep, almost shockingly potent, wine. A blast of dark cherry, plum, mocha, spice and licorice hits the palate. This flamboyant, generous Margaux is sure to find many admirers. The 2021 is naturally still coming together, but it is hugely promising. The tannins just need a bit of polish here.

A charming wine derived from vineyards in the commune of Sousans characterized by deep, rather sandy gravels, the 2021 La Gurgue delivers aromas of sweet dark berries and plums, followed by a medium-bodied, supple and fleshy palate that's charming and open-knit. Fully 19% Petit Verdot, from massal selections, makes this an unusual blend from proprietor Claire Villars-Lurton.
