Grands Chênes - Médoc 2023

The estate

The 49-hectare large vineyard of Château Les Grands Chênes is located on the edge of the remains of an ancient fortress from the 16th century. This fortress is the witness of the historical dynamism in the international business trade of the Médoc region. It is in Saint-Christoly-du-Médoc, a town once known for its port,  that the vines of Château Les Grands Chênes are to be found.

Ideally planted on a fine ridge of Garonne gravel, Château Les Grands Chênes makes the most of this very high quality terroir. Château Les Grands Chênes, owned by Bernard Magrez, produces a fine wine for those in the know, a privilege for wine lovers who like to make great discoveries.

Red and black currants, smoked tobacco, and lead pencil notes define the 2023 Château Les Grands Chênes, a straight-up classic Médoc that's medium-bodied and has a fruit-loaded, supple mouthfeel, beautiful tannins, and a great finish.

Smoky red fruits flowers, tobacco, and cherries with hints licorice fill the nose. On the palate, the wine is fresh, fruity, and clean, with more focus than in previous vintages due to a reduction in the amount of oak used in the aging process. 60% Merlot, with 40% Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink from 2026-2038. 90-92 Pts.

The 2023 Les Grands Chenes is soft, round and enveloping, Silky tannins wrap around a core of black fruit, gravel, spice, menthol, dried herbs and mocha. Most of the wine is now aged in a combination of terra cotta, neutral oak and tank, which really seems to exalt the brightness of fruit in this Merlot-based blend.

The 2023 Les Grands Chênes was picked from September 18 to October 6 at 49hL/ha. This vintage includes 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon. It has a tightly knit bouquet with black cherries and blueberry fruit, finely delineated, although not quite as detailed as the preceding Fombrauge. The palate is medium-bodied with plush, rounded tannins that lend a velvety texture. Maybe it needs a little more grip on the finish, and there is just a touch of warmth to address. I can imagine this satiating thirst in the first eight to ten years. This is one for those seeking a bit more opulence in 2023.

Dark ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, brightening on the rim. Fresh wild berries, red cherries, delicately floral, orange zest underneath. Medium body, some strawberry confit, subtle tannins, salty finish, offers uncomplicated drinking plea- sure.
