G d'Estournel - Médoc 2023

G d'Estournel, a radiant and voluptuous wine

Property of Michel Reybier since 2000, Cos d’Estournel pursues its destiny, between audacity and humility.

Produced from 20 hectares of vines planted in the North of the Médoc, Goulée by Cos d'Estournel is renamed "G d'Estournel" from 2019 vintage and on. The wine also benefits from a new packaging allowing it to be more strongly associated to the Cos d'Estournel universe.

The Seductive 2023 Vintage:

Produced on a terroir in the northern Médoc, G d’Estournel 2023 displays its characteristic freshness and remarkable balance. The clay soils on which it is grown and the proximity of the Gironde Estuary allowed its Merlot to compensate for hot weather
in early September. Harvest began on September 13 and ended on October 2, so that grapes could be picked at the height of ripeness.

The 2023 G d'Estournel has quite an intense bouquet for this cuvée, with bold blackberry and bilberry scents. Fine purity of fruit. The palate is medium-bodied, with earthy black fruit. Quite a firm tannic backbone here, and it needs a little more flesh to come through on the finish. Just a bit "serious" at the moment.

Dark olives, bark, mocha and blackberries. The expressive medium- to full-bodied palate shows mulberries touched by cedar, with incisive acidity and firm tannins in the finish. A blend of 64% merlot, 26% cabernet sauvignon, 7% cabernet franc and 3% petit verdot. Imposing, yet with a sense of finesse. Better from 2028.

The 2023 G D’Estournel checks in as 64% Merlot, 26% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. This juicy, medium-bodied, ripe, nicely textured effort has bright red and black fruits, some tobacco and chocolaty nuances, ripe tannins, and a balanced, charming style

The 2023 G d'Estournel is deep garnet-purple in color. Notions of black raspberries, boysenberries, and cranberry sauce spill from the glass, followed by hints of dried Provence herbs and wet slate. The light-bodied palate is crunchy and refreshing, with a lively backbone and chewy tannins, finishing with an herbal lift. The blend is 64% Merlot, 26% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot.

Blackberries, black cherries, chocolate, and licorice pop effortlessly. The medium-bodied palate is easy-to-like, forward, fresh, and mildly chalky, with a fun, peppery accent in the finish. This is the first vintage to include their new parcels, bringing the vineyard to 24 hectares of vines. You can enjoy this on release. The wine blends 64% Merlot, 26% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. Drink from 2026-2034. 90-92 Pts.

A serious G d'Estournel to celebrate its 20th vintage, well balanced, plenty of spice alongside the blueberry fruits. A touch soft through the mid palate, but great freshness and juice. An extra 4ha of vines to G over the past few years, with more clay and limestone, to help keep acidity in increasingly hot summers, taking it to around 25ha of vines. 45hl/h yield, harvet September 13 to October 2, 20% new oak for ageing. In organic conversion.

The 2023 G d’Estournel is a seriously beautiful wine. Dark, layered and super-expressive, the 2023 has so much to offer. An explosion of red/purplish fruit, spice, rose petal, lavender and mocha makes a strong opening impression. This is an especially bold, fruit-forward vintage for the G, perhaps because of the inclusion of recently acquired parcels planted on clay/limestone soils. The 2023 is all about harmony, and there is plenty of that.

The 2023 G d'Estournel has a very intense and ripe bouquet for this cuvée compared to recent vintages. It’s opulent, almost ravishing. The palate is quite precocious with a granular texture and fine acidity, revealing a little graphite and a dab of black pepper on its linear finish. It is just missing a little amplitude, turning a little spirituous on the aftertaste.
