Grands Chênes - Médoc 2022

The estate

The 49-hectare large vineyard of Château Les Grands Chênes is located on the edge of the remains of an ancient fortress from the 16th century. This fortress is the witness of the historical dynamism in the international business trade of the Médoc region. It is in Saint-Christoly-du-Médoc, a town once known for its port,  that the vines of Château Les Grands Chênes are to be found.

Ideally planted on a fine ridge of Garonne gravel, Château Les Grands Chênes makes the most of this very high quality terroir. Château Les Grands Chênes, owned by Bernard Magrez, produces a fine wine for those in the know, a privilege for wine lovers who like to make great discoveries.

Château Les Grands Chênes 2022 can be considered one of the finest representatives of rich and mature wines in the Médoc region. This deep and intense wine boasts a thick, velvety tannin structure, reminiscent of melting dark chocolate on the palate. Berry aromas and spicy fragrances complement each other beautifully, creating a smooth experience despite the high concentration. The finish of the 2022 vintage is powerful, and it is expected to maintain a robust structure even after aging.

Muscular, reserved aromatics, intense, concentrated, cocoa bean and espresso, savoury plum and black pepper spice, very much swaggers through the palate, firmly placed on the Left Bank, rose stems on the finish gives austerity, leave for a good five years before approaching. Good quality wine. Heavy bottle.

Darker currants, leafy tobacco, chocolate, and spring flower notes all emerge from the 2022 Château Les Grands Chênes, a charming, medium-bodied, elegant 2022 that has beautiful purity of fruit, supple yet present tannins, and nicely integrated acidity. It's not massive, yet it shines for its balance and elegance.

The 2022 Les Grands Chênes offers dark plum and light bergamot scents on the nose with a touch of latte in the background. The palate remains smooth from start to finish, lacking depth or grip. This Médoc is predesigned to be approachable from the start. Fine.

Fine baking spices, ripe but fresh plums and berries on the nose. Juicy and medium-bodied, with soft-grained tannins and a nicely fluid and juicy finish. Drink or hold.

The 2022 Les Grands Chênes is a potent, explosive wine in its first impression. A rush of dark cherry, incense, licorice, scorched earth, dried herbs and mocha all infuse the 2022 with notable depth. This bold, virile Médoc from Bernard Magrez is loaded with character. Drink it over the next 10-15 years.

Controlled and quite serious, the lively red and black fruit is ripe and just shy of plump giving some bounce to the palate but overall this stays quite lean and serious, all in one line, with the tannins giving the main focus and density in the mouth. Well worked, nice detail and purity to the fruit but on the bold side, still young and closed but great fruitiness and will be enjoyable in time. Good acidity too and some minty graphite minerality as well. Rolland & Associés consultants.

The 2022 Les Grands Chênes was picked 15 September to 6 October at 40hL/ha. Red plum, cinnamon and light briar scents unfolds on the nose, just a touch of melted tar. The palate is medium-bodied, powdery in texture, dusky black fruit with some wood tannins just controlling the finish. A second bottle was slightly better with a chocolaty aftertaste.

The 2022 Les Grands Chenes, 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, is deep garnet-purple in color. It slowly unfurls to offer scents of baked red and black plums, warm cassis, and dried roses, plus touches of pencil shavings and tilled soil. The medium-bodied palate is dense and muscular, with a sturdy structure of chewy tannins and seamless freshness, finishing savory.

Bon vin de Bordeaux, universel dans sa saveur et sa profondeur de fruit, avec une rondeur séduisante dans ce 2022.

Pure red and blue fruits, flowers, and spicy notes define the 2022 Château Les Grands Chênes, a medium-bodied, juicy Médoc offering surprisingly bright acidity that’s countered by a concentrated, dense mid-palate. It will be interesting to see how this comes together, but given its concentration and purity of fruit, it should be solid.

The 2022 Les Grands Chênes is plump, juicy and wonderfully expressive right out of the gate. Succulent red cherry, plum, leather, rose petal and sweet spice are beautifully amplified in this racy, engaging red from Bernard Magrez. Sweet floral and spice notes reappear on the finish. The 2022 is an absolute delight. Tasted two times. Drinking window : 2025-2034

Black and red fruits with nuances of tobacco leaf, and espresso beans open the wine. On the palate, the wine is ripe, sweet, round, and forward, finishing with sweet, cherries, toasty oak, and chalky tannins on the backend. The wine blends 60% Merlot with 40% Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink from 2025-2038.
