Grandes Murailles - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2021

ESTATE PHILOSOPHY
Since their acquisition of the estate in 2013, and drawing on all their experience of the same soil-type at Clos Fourtet, the Cuvelier family, under the impetus of Matthieu Cuvelier, has consistently invested both in the vineyard, moving towards sustainable viticulture, carefully respecting natural balances; and in the wine-making, exercising perfect control over the high quality of the wines produced from the plots of Les Grandes Murailles. Working in meticulous detail year after year, the Cuvelier family has endeavoured to produce from this small 2-hectare limestone parcel, timeless wines expressing finesse and precision, capable of ageing a great many years.

DESCRIPTION OF THE VINTAGE
IN THE VINES The 2021 growing season started with a mild, rainy winter, which brought about an even budding around 20th March. Spring began in cool, dry weather with temperature lows below zero which led to destructive frosts, although a proactive anti-frost strategy at the estate prevented any crop losses. A low-pressure system set in during the months of May and June with a welcome settled spell of weather during the flowering process. Fungal disease pressure was very high, and outbreaks were only prevented through our constant care and attention in the vineyard. The mid-veraison point was reached at the beginning of August. Qualitative water stress brought about by our limestone soils and 4 weeks of fine weather ensured good ripening of the pips and a build-up of phenolic compounds. In September, the berries completed the refining of the tannins and developed a complex aromatic palette.
IN THE CELLARS 20% of the juices were bled from the vats in order to rebalance the juice/solids ratio and harmonise the natural balance of the vintage.

The 2021 Les Grandes Murailles is a fine effort in this vintage, its last before being incorporated into Clos Fourtet with the 2022 Saint-Émilion classification. Dark and brooding, with persistent tannins, the 2021 is going to need a few years to soften.

The 2021 Les Grandes Murailles is a fine effort in this vintage, its last before being incorporated into Clos Fourtet with the 2022 Saint-Émilion classification. Dark and brooding, with persistent tannins, the 2021 is going to need a few years to soften. The 2021 is an especially somber Grandes Murailles, but it does have good energy and plenty of style. Lavender, mocha and crème de cassis linger. It will be interesting to see if the tannins soften.

What turned out to be the last vintage produced from this two-hectare parcel just outside the village of Saint-Émilion, which has now been incorporated into Clos Fourtet, the 2021 Grandes Murailles exhibits aromas of cherries, minty red berries, spices and pencil shavings, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy palate built around powdery tannins and tangy acids.

Aromas of currants, blackberries, dark chocolate and black truffles. Medium body, firm and chewy with plenty of tannin backbone. Spice, pepper and hints of black tobacco. Solid finish. Needs three or four years to soften. Best after 2025.

I was blown away by the 2021 Château Les Grandes Murailles. It's another sleeper in this challenging vintage that merits serious attention. All Merlot that saw 20% of the blend seeing malolactic fermentation in barrel and then again in 60% new oak, it offers a brilliant perfume of mostly red fruits supported by classic limestone influenced notes of white flowers, chalky minerality, and white truffle. Medium to full-bodied, seamless, and just incredibly elegant, it's a beautiful complete, layered barrel sample that will compete with anything in the vintage.

Ce 100 % merlot sur calcaire réussit bien dans ce millésime, avec une parfaite cohérence du début à la fin de bouche, c’est fin, long et profond.

Les Grandes Murailles 2021 presents some very soft aromas, quietly sending forth the unique fragrances of wild jujube, blueberry, and even orange peel. Though the texture of this vintage is quite light, the contents and detail are all there. In this wine, you can taste the liquid foundation-like velvet tannins surrounded by the salty notes. And there's an invisible structure hidden behind the juicy palate. It must be a representative of the elegant Saint-Émilion in 2021. Flowers, black cherries, wet earth, thyme and espresso on the nose. The wine is medium-bodied, soft, silky, refined, sweet and fresh, with loads of silky red fruits on the palate and in the finish. Drink from 2023-2037. The wine is produced from 100% Merlot, 13.5% ABV. Drink from 2023-2037. 91-93

The 2021 Les Grandes Murailles was not affected by frost thanks to wax candles. Matured in 50% new oak, it has a fragrant bouquet with blackberry and raspberry, wilted rose petal and a touch of gravel. The palate is medium-bodied with strict tannins, fresh with ample salinity, modest depth and a smooth, cohesive finish. Not a powerful Les Grandes Murailles, yet stylish and with plenty of character. 13.5% alcohol

Leuchtendes Rubin.

A definite overperformer, the 2021 Grandes Murailles has turned out beautifully this year. Offering up aromas of dark berries, red plums, orange zest, rose petals and truffle, it's medium to full-bodied, supple and fleshy, with a layered core of fruit, powdery tannins and lively acids, concluding with a floral finish. It's 100% Merlot from a two-hectare parcel just outside the village of Saint-Émilion.

The most gorgeous smoky, salty, ripe, sweet, fruity nuances on the nose - what aromatic complexity here! Succulent and juicy, still with quite a high toned edge to the fruit, just the right side of austerity with the pencil lead and graphite edge to the tannins. I like the power and concentration alongside the tension that gives it focus and makes it little bit hard to taste right now - but this is well made with bounce, push and sophisticated charm. Definitely a dark savoury style, black fruited, showing the muscle and might of Merlot that made it through the year. Ageing will work well here. 3.45pH. A yield of 38hL/ha. Tasted three times.
