Grand Puy Lacoste - Pauillac 2001

The history of Grand-Puy-Lacoste is fascinating as it is a timeless family saga that traces its roots back to the 16th century. The name 'Grand-Puy' is derived from the ancient term 'puy,' signifying a 'hillock' or 'small height.' True to its namesake, the vineyard occupies elevated outcrops, boasting a terroir akin to that of the Médoc's premier growths.

In 1978 it became associated with the esteemed Borie family. François-Xavier Borie, the current owner, has played a pivotal role in orchestrating a magnificent renaissance for this Grand Cru Classé in Pauillac. He initiated a comprehensive revitalization effort that encompassed the entire estate. His substantial investments and relentless commitment to enhancing Grand-Puy-Lacoste have consistently elevated the quality of its wines, artfully capturing the finesse of its exceptional Pauillac terroir.

A deep ruby/purple color is accompanied by this property’s tell-tale cassis characteristics. Medium-bodied and monolithic, with fine ripeness as well as depth along with light to moderate tannin in the finish, the 2001 Grand-Puy-Lacoste should be at its peak between 2006-2014.

As usual, a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc, this deep ruby/purple-colored wine shows sweet, straightforward creme de cassis notes, excellent concentration, a certain elegance, good weight, and light to moderate tannin in a velvety-textured finish. It should be a forward and delicious Grand-Puy-Lacoste, reminiscent of the 1999, but with more weight and depth. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2015.

Comme de coutûme, le 2001 de Grand-Puy-Lacoste se compose à 70% de cabernet-sauvignon, à 28% de merlot et pour le reste de cabernet-franc. D'un rubis-poupre profond, il révèle des arômes sans détour, mais doux, de crème de cassis, et manifeste en bouche une élégance, une corpulence et une concentration d'excellent aloi. L'ensemble, à la finale veloutée, recèle des tannins légers. Un vin délicieux, bien évolué, qui évoque son aîné de 1999, en plus corsé et plus profond. A boire jusqu'en 2015.

Soft creme de cassis aromas dominate the aromatics of this medium-bodied, elegant effort. This blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc offers a soft, fleshy, glycerin-imbued attack, medium body, very good to excellent concentration, and light to moderate tannin. A sleeper of the vintage. It should drink well between 2004-2015.
