Giodo - Brunello Di Montalcino - Brunello Di Montalcino 2018

The history of Giodo in Montalcino begins in 2002, when Carlo Ferrini, one of Italy’s best-known winemakers identified his first hectare to purchase in the prestigious Brunello denomination. This first acquisition launched a new adventure and a fresh challenge, but one that was really the fulfilment of a long-held passion. Giodo name is a tribute to Carlo’s parents : Giovanna and Donatello.

Today, the winery, lying midway between Sant’Angelo in Colle and Sant’Antimo, relies on 5.5 hectares of vineyard. Here Ferrini planted the Sangiovese clones he had found to be most convincing over the years. The original nucleus of vines is dedicated to the production of the Brunello di Montalcino (2.5ha) and the younger ones to “La Quinta”, the Toscana IGT (3ha).

The Brunello is aged 30 months in 500-litre oak casks but also in 700 and 2,500-litre oak casks.

Both labels depict a human icon and a circle, which is a representation of respectively the “Sangiovese” and the winegrowing world.
On the Brunello’s label, the man is inside because Brunello di Montalcino wines are made with only one grape variety, the Sangiovese.

Black-cherry, violet, lavender and orange-peel aromas follow through to a medium to full body with ultra-fine tannins that run the length of the wine. Such focus and brightness. Agile and weightless at the end. Not the biggest Giodo, but pretty and precise. Drinkable now, but wait for two or three years. Try after 2024.

Farmyard notes on the nose, caramel, wood, cedar and toast. Lively sweet strawberries and red berry fruit on the palate, touches of sharpness, bitterness and a creamy sensation from the tannins. I like the soft salinity - wet stone and salt that dot the palate and the sweetness with acidity keeps things so lifted and joyful. Not hugely complex, but a supremely elegant expression, gentle, balanced and complete. Ageing for approximately 30 months in 500, 700 and 2,500-litre oak casks, followed by additional time in concrete vats and 18 months in bottle.

This wine was tasted in a preview capacity as it won't hit the market until the beginning of next year. Tasted at the Giodo winery in one of the most remote and beautiful spots in the appellation surrounded by forests and wide open panoramas, the 2018 Brunello di Montalcino gives us a promising taste of what we can expect from this warm vintage. The wine delivers ripe, but delicate aromas of cassis and dark cherry with shades of lilac, violet and crushed limestone. The tannins are present and well managed. Carlo Ferrini's Brunello promises a long aging trajectory.
