Poggio Antico - Brunello Di Montalcino 2018

Poggio Antico, high up in the hills of Montalcino

Poggio Antico is one of Montalcino's most elevated estates, situated southwest of the fame medieval citadel. Its 35-hectare (86 acres) vineyard area is cultivated at an altitude of almost 500 meters (1 640 ft). The estate's unique location, high altitude, and perfect exposure all contribute to the ideal conditions which give the wines of Poggio Antico intense bouquets and incredible finesse. Founded in 1976, a new team arrived at the head of the estate in 2017. As soon as they arrived, they led a soil survey to identify the micro terroirs within the vineyard in order to implement a polt-by-plot approach. They have launched many new and exciting projects, including the organic conversion of the vineyards, cellar renovations and plans for a new hospitality center.

Poggio Antico, Brunello di Montalcino D.O.C.G, is made with 100% homegrown Sangiovese. This classic Brunello is produced in the traditional way to let the purity of the grape shine through. A long wood aging (30 months in 25 and 40-hl Slavonian oak barrels) and bottle refinement (18 months) give this wine incredible depth and complexity.

The 2018 vintage

The 2018 vintage experienced a very cool and windy climate, registering temperatures below average even during summer. This led maturation to last throughout September and benefit from the remarkable diurnal temperature variation. At the end of the month, we harvested perfectly fragrant Sangiovese grapes distinguished by a well-balanced phenolic concentration, hinting to a solid and phenomenal aging

An enticing blend of plum sauce, violets and lavender is complemented by hints of exotic spice and white smoke as the 2018 Brunello di Montalcino blossoms in the glass. This is soothingly round and supple with cool-toned acidity and polished red berry fruits that flow across the palate with ease. The 2018 tapers off amazingly fresh with blue and purple inner florals and a tinge of licorice over a subtle coating of sweet tannins. This understated beauty may not make old bones, but it's certainly showing beautifully now and there are many years of pleasurable drinking in store for collectors.

The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino is gorgeous, floral and finessed, wafting up with a classic Sangiovese profile blending dried rose and black cherries, complicated by dusty earth, worn leather and hints of cedar spice. This shows a beautiful ripeness of fr

A riot of red berry fruit nuances on the nose - baked and fresh, wonderfully aromatic. Bright and forward, this has a nice texture - smooth and sleek, lithe and sapid with a good juicy core of red berries, sour cherries and spicy tomato edges. Tannins give the frame and the slight grip and this has excellent fresh acidity. It's well worked, soft and light just losing some propulsion and density towards the finish but plenty to enjoy here.

The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino shows a pretty, mid-weight appearance with shiny dark ruby highlights. The wine offers soft fruit with cherry and wild forest berry at the front. On a second wave, it delivers light spice, earthy mineral and cured tobacco. Both the fruity and the savory sides of the wine are well balanced over solid tannic support and balanced freshness. Production is 29,000 bottles.

Poggio Antico has 33 hectares of vines, with 26 hectares designated to the production of Brunello di Montalcino. The estate started its conversion to organic farming in 2017. The estate just named a new general manager, Pier Giuseppe D'Alessandro, to replace the outgoing Federico Trost.

This is a lovely wine, bright with plenty of momentum, nothing too structured or concentrated, reflecting the vintage style. Packed with raspberry fruit, orange peel and fresh acidities in abundance. Compelling for being light on its feet while still delivering a ton of flavour. You feel the air under its heels, and it is made for food. Winemaker Pippo d'Alessandro and Alessio Sostegni, 33ha estate, owner Marcel van Poecke.

Lovely purity of fruit with aromas of peaches, plums, ripe cherries and lemons, alongside some spice box and moss. Medium to full body with fine, creamy tannins. Wonderfully juicy and approachable with a supple and seamless finish. Drink now or hold.
