Fourcas Dupré - Listrac-Médoc 2022

The estate

Recognized for the exceptional quality of its terroirs, the estate has been producing memorable and unclassifiable wines since 1843 that generations of wine lovers love to pass on.

Château Fourcas Dupré, nestled at the top of the Listrac appellation, produces wines on 47 hectares that reflect the terroir which saw them born in the middle of this sublime Medoc landscape.

In 2019, Gérard Jicquel, an entrepreneur from Brittany, bought the estate. He is a lifelong wine lover and an unconditional lover of Bordeaux wines. He works daily with his teams for the development and preservation of a heritage recognized for generations at Château Fourcas Dupré, but also at Château d'Agassac, which he has just acquired.

2022 vintage

In 2022, the climate conditions were perfect for Fourcas Dupré's gravelly-clayey soils. Thanks to the altitude of the estate and its location surrounded by forest, the vineyard was protected against heat waves.
A part of the ageing is done in amphoras to keep the purity of the fruit.
Fourcas Dupré 2022 is rich, dense, creamy with nice freshness.

I must apologize and retract my earlier praise for Château Fourcas Dupré from the En Primeur tasting. The delicate floral and fruity aromas that swirl in the glass have remained largely unchanged, but the gentle elegance that I had admired is no longer present. The issue lies with the tannins. In my opinion, the refined nature of Château Fourcas Dupré requires a delicate body to complement it. If the tannins are too overpowering, it undermines the identity that Château Fourcas Dupré seeks to present. However, setting aside the expression of the wine’s DNA, it is undoubtedly a competent Listrac.

Medium intensity in colour, starts off with black pepper spice, figs, black tea, pomegranate and blackberries. They have done a good job of teasing out the acidity among the ripe fruit character, a little short on the finish. 40% new oak, 40% one year barrels, 2% amphora and 18% cement vats. Ge´rard Jicquel owner.

The best vintage of this cuvée I've tasted, the 2022 Château Fourcas Dupré is inky hued with a concentrated, medium to full-bodied, incredibly impressive style that stays light on its feet and balanced. Smoky darker currants, leafy tobacco, chocolate, and crushed stone notes all shine here, and this beauty will have at least two decades of longevity if well stored.

The 2022 Fourcas Dupré offers a light floral bouquet with iris and peony scents. The medium-bodied palate features grainy tannins and a classic style, gaining weight with a clean, crisp black fruit tone on the finish. There is nice sapidity here.

Attractive aromas of dark cherries, blackcurrants, red spices, pencil shavings and dried orange peel. Medium- to full-bodied with firm and compact tannins and a smooth, rounded texture. Dense and velvety. Drink from 2026.

The 2022 Fourcas Dupré is a virile, bombastic wine. Dark red fruit, herbs, licorice and gravel give this effusive Listrac much of its immediacy and personality. The 2022 has excellent depth. All it needs is a bit of polish around the edges. Floral and savory notes lift the finish.

Supple and juicy, nicely balanced with well integrated but powdery and softly gripping tannins. Really well worked, not the most complex, but really enjoyable and classic with rich, concentrated fruit, freshness and mass appeal. Lovely. On the tannic side but the texture is so appealing with no harshness and really harmonious fruit to acidity ratio. 92 Gorgeous finesse and control, lots of detail and definition. A yield of 26hl/ha.

Château Fourcas Dupré 2022 captivates with its elegant and intricate aromatic expression. Cherries, plums, and delicate red plums dance lightly in the glass, accompanied by a subtle mocha undertone, painting a charming and heartwarming scene. In recent years, Château Fourcas Dupré has refined its palate to become increasingly supple, thanks to its velvety texture, which exudes a gentle character even amidst the robust tannins of 2022.

Deep crimson. Blackcurrant, blackberry, chinotto, cola aromas. Well concenarted wine with plentiful juicy dark berry fruits, fine chocolaty textures, some bitter sweet notes and underlying cedar complexity. Very good density, volume and torque. (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot 30% new oak)

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2022 Fourcas Dupre skips out with cheery notions of black raspberries, kirsch, and cassis, followed by suggestions of garrigue and mossy tree bark. The medium-bodied palate is tightly knit, with nice bright black and red fruit layers and a firm, grainy texture, finishing with a refreshing lift.

Belle expression fruitée au nez, des touches florales suaves, une bouche dans le même style, avec du corps, de la générosité, du fruit et une grande vivacité en finale.

Another terrific Listrac, the dense purple-hued 2022 Château Fourcas Dupré boasts a solid perfume of ripe cassis, violets, sappy herbs, and graphite. With medium to full-bodied richness on the palate, it has ripe tannins, plenty of mid-palate depth, and a great finish.

A wealth of sweet, ripe, fresh, blackberries and currants show on the nose and palate of this medium-bodied, vibrant, savory, fruit-filled wine. Drink from 2025-2038.

The 2022 Fourcas-Dupré offers up attractive aromas of sweet cassis, violets and plums, followed by a medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with lively acids but assertive, firm tannins that might have been mitigated by a gentler touch during extraction, given the vintage's tannic weight. Will élevage be kind to it? 86 - 87+?

Plenty of dark berry and crushed stone character here with a medium body. Juicy fruit. Fresh finish. Well done.
