Fombrauge - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2024

The estate

"Fons Brogiera: a spring surrounded by heather”. This was the first mention of the name Fombrauge which, for 6 centuries now, has epitomised the elegance of the Grand Cru Classé wines of Saint Emilion. From the Canolle family in the 15th century to Bernard Magrez today, six families have succeeded each other in owning and running Château Fombrauge.

Its vineyard is distinguished first by its size (58.60 hectares), and then by its diversity of soils as well as exposures that give Fombrauge wine its complexity and identity.

To ensure the full expression of the estate’s rich terroir, Bernard Magrez, the owner since 1999, today combines ancestral savoir-faire with precision viticulture.

Fragrant raspberry and blueberry on the nose. Smells sweet, ripe and floral. Quite a textured wine, tannins make the most impact, but they’re grippy and are combined with round fruit that adds purity and clarity. It’s certainly generous but balanced and kept in check. Cool and crystalline, there's vibrancy but a sense of finesse too while punchy. This has good potential.

Deep garnet-purple colored. Sails out of the glass with notes of fresh blueberries and black raspberries, plus nuances of anise, garrigue, and wet slate. The light to medium-bodied palate is lively and soft with pure black and red berry flavors and a spicy lift on the finish.

I loved the 2024 Château Fombrauge both times I was able to taste it. Deeper ruby-hued, with perfumed notes of black raspberries, red plums, spring flowers, and spicy wood, it's medium-bodied, has a supple, layered mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and outstanding length. Its purity, finesse, and suppleness are exceptional.

A little steely on the fruit with spiced red cherries and berries. Medium-bodied, this is chewy and lighter on the palate this year, showing some angular tannins that will need time to dissolve. Tight, medium-length finish.

Dezent rauchig im Duft, mit roten und dunklen Beeren, etwas Tabak; leichter Gaumen, runde Tannine, gut dosiertes Holz, rotfruchtiges, mittellanges Finale, endet leicht trocknend.

The 2024 Fombrauge, matured in 70% new oak, has a simple floral nose that does not possess the complexity of recent vintages. It comes across as a little staid. The palate is medium-bodied and balanced, with supple tannins. This is curiously a little Left Bank in terms of structure with a short but refreshingly sapid finish. It's not the best vintage, but if the aromatics improve, this could be a useful Saint-Émilion.

The 2024 Fombrauge is supple, forward and open-knit, all of which make it a fine choice for drinking upon release. Supple contours wrap around a core of plum, dark red cherry, spice, new leather, cedar and rose petal. This is a very different style than the past because of the reduction of new oak and gentler winemaking overall. There is a bit of firmness on the finish that needs time to resolve. Hopefully, élevage will take care of that. Aging is 70% in oak (50% new) and 30% in a combination of ceramic, cement and stainless steel. Tasted three times.

Licorice, cocoa, and cherries develop quickly in the nose. Medium-bodied, with a core of black cherries, spice, and a touch of leafy herbs that are evident in the finish. You can enjoy this wine without hesitation upon release. The wine blends 90% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc. Drink from 2027-2038.

Dark ruby, purple reflections, subtle edge brightening. Delicate notes of blueberry and cherry, a hint of herbal savouriness, nuances of caramel. Medium body, red berry confit, lively acidity structure, racy and mineral on the finish, lemony touch in the aftertaste.
