Fombrauge - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2021

The estate

Fons Brogiera: a spring surrounded by heather”. This was the first mention of the name Fombrauge which, for 6 centuries now, has epitomised the elegance of the Grand Cru Classé wines of Saint Emilion. From the Canolle family in the 15th century to Bernard Magrez today, six families have succeeded each other in owning and running Château Fombrauge, providing the estate, which harvested its first grapes in 1599.

With a vineyard covering 58.60 hectares (nearly 145 acres), this unusually large surface area for Saint-Emilion brings a unique typicity to its terroir –a typicity in diversity. The diversity of its soils and the vineyard’s wide range of exposures give the wine of Fombrauge its complexity and identity.

To ensure the full expression of the estate’s rich terroir, Bernard Magrez, the owner since 1999, today combines ancestral savoir-faire with precision viticulture.

The 2021 Fombrauge, bottled last May, has a sweet nose, with tinned prune and Medjool dates infusing the slightly smudged red fruit and just a touch of warmth coming through. The palate is medium-bodied, lightly spiced on the entry with white pepper and c

Spiced berries, cassis, roasted capsicum and a hint of dried strawberries. Abundant, lightly chewy tannins on the palate with juicy fruit and a tight finish. Better in a year or two.

Perfumed and fresh with flowers, such as lavender and violets. Medium-bodied with fine tannins that are layered and refined in texture.

The 2021 Château Fombrauge is upfront and forward, with creamy red fruits and subtle oak, medium-bodied richness, silky tannins, and solid balance. It should drink nicely right out of the gate and offer plenty of pleasure over the coming decade or so. Tasted twice.

Tannin juteux de bonne dimension, maîtrise technique évidente.

Even under the difficult condition of 2021, Fombrauge manages to show its authentic maturity. The currently pronounced baking aromas do not overshadow the distinctive fragrance of berry fruits, especially the ripe scents of red berries and rhubarb jam. It is full-body and mellow, with fine tannins and firm structure.

The 2021 Fombrauge was picked from September 30 to October 18 and made with malo in new barrels. This is quite heady and shows some pruny aromas on the nose. Like the aromatics, I feel that the palate is pushed to compensate for the shortcomings of the growing season, and while it has presence, it is missing complexity and delineation, not to mention the freshness that is the leitmotif of the season.

The 2021 Fombrauge is a bright, punchy wine. In 2021, readers will find a decidedly supple Fombrauge built on a core of red-fleshed fruit and bright acids, with less overt richness and oak intensity than in the past. I very much like the vibrancy here. Bright saline notes punctuate the finish.

Purpurrot.

Aromas of sweet cherries, berry preserves and Black Forest cake, framed by a lavish application of creamy new oak, introduce the 2021 Fombrauge, a medium to full-bodied, broad and textural wine that's supple and fleshy, with a rich core of sweet fruit and lively balancing acids. As usual, this is a generous, front-loaded, somewhat confectionary Saint-Émilion from Bernard Magrez, though it's well made in its style.
