Favia, Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon - Napa Valley 2023

NEW WINE!

Favia Winery, the passion of Annie Favia and Andy Erickson

Favia Winery was founded in 2001 as a partnership between Annie Favia and her husband Andy Erickson. Annie is a passionate viticulturist and a true nature lover whereas Andy is a highly regarded winemaker in Napa who serves as a consultant for prominent wineries. Located in Coombsville, Napa Valley, their philosophy is straightforward: crafting soulful wines that genuinely reflect the unique character of the vineyards they originate from.

The blocks owned by Favia at
Oakville Ranch — high above the eastern edge of the Valley, organically farmed on red, rocky, iron- rich soils — have produced some of the most compelling wines in the area for many years. It is these red hill sides that continue to astound Annie and Andy year after year, the wines having such power, intensity, and strength of character.

The 2023 vintage:

The 2023 vintage was remarkable in terms of its mild growing season, steady ripening, and extended autumn. Vineyards started the year with plenty of soil moisture, and with a cool spring, the vines managed to grow a very balanced canopy and crop, without excessive vigor. Cooler than normal summer temperatures made for grapes with ample natural acidity, full phenolic maturity, and highly expressive aromatics. The resulting wines are dark in color, substantial in structure, while fresh and well balanced. This vintage will be age worthy for sure.

Tasting notes

Our 2023 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon will certainly evolve in the cellar, but it has been crafted to be enjoyed right away. Dark red fruits, red raspberries, graphite and exotic woods are just a few of the complexities that come forward immediately. The savory tones and freshness of Coombsville meld well with the generous black fruits and solid structure of Oakville. Careful tannin extraction, barrel aging for eighteen months in 50% new French oak barrels, and botting without fining or filtration, ensure that the wine retains fruit intensity and maintains its bold texture and generous length.

Intense, tangible crushed raspberry and cassis puree, capturing texture and flavour, concentrated and powerful yet with a salted caramel lick and a gentle pacing that steps carefully through the palate. Great stuff. Natural yeasts, low intervention, no filtering or fining. This year it is the first time to be almost entirely Oakville vines, now in co-ownership between the Heeneus family with Annie Favia and Andy Erickson.

A first release on la place of this wine, from parcels next to Opus One. Very poised, elegant, refined and charming, with dark berries and cherries vying for attention with white pepper and assorted delicate white floral petal notes. Incense. Very beautiful and beguiling with more and more floral complexity overlaying the dark berries with aeration. Graphite and a hint of cedar. Violet. Rosemary. Lemon thyme. Spherical and dense at the core. Gorgeous. A black hole at the centre sucking you towards it. Sumptuous, succulent and gorgeous. So juicy and lithe on the finish, the Cabernet Franc sings in this and accentuates its lovely poise and cool elegance. 98.

A brand new wine from Annie Favia and Andy Erickson with mainly Oakville fruit from next to Opus One. Gorgeous aromatics on the nose, black chocolate, ripe blackcurrants. Supple and alive, this has energy from the get go, a tangy undercurrent of acidity that really enlivens the senses with cherry, cranberry and plum. Total finesse, lots of flavour but so seamless and integrated with tannins that give structure and hold your attention but don't overwhelm in any way. Strong but elegant and long. Floral, scented and peppery - this has Andy and Annie's fingerprints on it and I love it. Such a juicy, smile-inducing finish too with a salty, blood iron and orange rind tang. Gorgeous.

The 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon is deep garnet-purple in color. It shoots from the glass with vivacious notes of cassis, wild blueberries, and red-currant jelly, giving way to hints of violets, licorice, and dark chocolate with a touch of menthol. The full-bodied palate is dense with black-fruit layers, supported by amazing tension and a very firm structure of ripe, grainy tannins, finishing with incredible length and depth. Wow. The blend is 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Petit Verdot.

In a new beginning for Favia, an equal blend of Coombsville and Oakville represents the best of both appellations—the fresh, savory, mineral edge of the former intertwining with the deep flavor and floral lift of the latter. Layers of fruit, supported by graphite, dried herbs, flowers and spices, lead to a luscious yet refined palate with finely tuned tannins and a bright line of acidity. A complete, balanced expression of Napa. 75% cabernet sauvignon, 21% cabernet franc and 4% petit verdot. Excellent. Drink or hold.
