Faugères - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2023

Silvio Denz Vineyards

The estate of Vignobles Silvio Denz in Saint-Emilion and in Sauternes share the passion that drives their owner. A love for wine and the prestige of great terroirs inspired the businessman to invest in the Bordeaux region. Having led Lalique Group to success, he channelled his enthusiasm and his taste for excellence into the acquisition and development of vineyard estates.

Château Faugères

The winery designed by the architect Mario Botta, now an iconic part of the estate and the appellation, overlooks the rows of vines. Five centuries separate this facade with its geographic lines from the picturesque atmosphere of the Chartreuse de Faugères, built in the 16th century. As well as being a remarkable work of architecture, the winery is also a technological tool designed for cuttingedge winemaking.

On the vineyard side, this 37-hectare estate is located on a limestone plateau and a clay-limestone hillside that impose a high degree of requirement. At Faugères, close attention is paid to the development of the growth cycle allowing the grapes to achieve ideal levels of ripeness every year.

2023

It is barely mid-September and the harvest shave already begun at Château Faugères! After a harsh year that required continued attention, the grapes were ready to be gradually carefully harvested as each plot that makes up the Faugères vineyard mosaic became ripe. This created a delicious harmony, with texture and flavours show casing magnificent concentration.

Aromas of asphalt, elderberries, plums and touches of licorice and hazelnuts. The palate is round and velvety, medium- to full-bodied, elegant but substantial. Drink or hold.

From the cooler eastern portion of the appellation, the 2023 Château Faugères is deep ruby/purple-hued and has a lively perfume of darker red and blue fruits as well as violets, spring flowers, and charcoal. It's medium-bodied and supple, with the more fruit-forward style of the vintage and outstanding length. Tasted multiple times with consistent results.

Faugères (Saint Émilion; 70% Merlot; 25% Cabernet Franc; 5% Cabernet Sauvignon; a final yield of 31.5 hl/ha; tasted at the Grand Cercle tasting at La Dauphine). Nicely focussed, with less oak than it used to have and less extraction too, so this glides rather more gracefully over the palate. Layered but not deep. Quite crystalline and silkily-textured, though that perhaps serves to reveal the slightly elevated acidity. Fine and very well-made, but not especially complex.

Quite floral in nature, the wine is also loaded with ripe, sweet, dark, red pit fruits, espresso, chocolate mint, licorice, and black raspberries. Medium/full-bodied, the wine is silky, lush soft, and polished, with luscious, dark pit fruits, coffee bean, and black cherries in the finish. The wine blends 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink from 2027-2039.

As always a reflection also of a powerful terroir that gives intense concentrated wines, with cocoa bean and black pepper spice, a a good lick of pumice stone, well handled if evident grilled oak.

The 2023 Faugères is a dense, voluptuous Saint-Émilion. Plush contours wrap around a core of blackberry jam, cloves, lavender, licorice and chocolate. This opulent, full-throttle Saint-Émilion is not at all subtle, yet it also has balance, in its own way. Tasted two times.

The 2023 Faugères has a similar bouquet to the Péby-Faugères this year, although likewise, there is a touch of prune that tips this into sur-maturité. The palate is nicely balanced and fresh on the entry, composed with light tannins, fine tension and admirable structure on the finish. I think that this will improve during élevage and hopefully dispense with the scintilla of over-ripeness.

Deep dark ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, brightening on the rim. Blackber- ries, cherries, a touch of fine oak, inviting bouquet. Juicy, elegant, fresh, ripe cher- ries, round tannins, fine acidity, elegant and good persistence, certain ageing poten- tial.
