Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Esprit de Pavie comes bounding out of the glass with youthful, exuberant black cherries, warm blackberries and stewed plums notes with touches of menthol, dark chocolate and candied violets. Medium to full-bodied, it fills the palate with juicy black berries and savory layers, framed by rounded tannins and a lively backbone, finishing with a minty kick.

Robe rouge grenat dense. Bouquet agréable, de bonne intensité, marqué par des notes de baies rouges. Au palais, le vin a du caractère et révèle quelques touches calcaires. Il a du nerf, du jus et du fruit. Un vin que l'on pourra déjà savourer dans sa jeunesse. 2020-2026 87/100

The entry-level wine of the estate is the 2016 Esprit de Pavie, which is primarily Merlot blended with 30% Cabernet Franc, coming from Saint Emilion and the Castillon region. This total charmer has a sweet bouquet of black cherries, licorice, and spice to go with a mouthfilling, pure, balanced style on the palate that’s already delicious. It certainly has estate character and is ideal for enjoying over the coming decade or so. I’d happily drink bottles.

The 2016 Esprit de Pavie has quite a deep color. The intense bouquet offers blackberry, raspberry coulis and light floral scents. The palate is medium-bodied with quite grainy tannin and rather hard in the mouth; it needs more flesh to come through on the finish.

The 2016 Esprit de Pavie is a tasty entry-level offering from Gerard Perse. Pliant, supple and inviting, the 2016 is a terrific choice for drinking now and over the next few years. Sweet red cherry, plum, mocha and floral notes all add nuance in this very pretty expressive red.

The 2016 Esprit de Pavie, a blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc, has an attractive bouquet with blackberry and briary aromas, quite lively and vivid, a charmer! The palate is medium-bodied with chunky tannin, good acidity, maybe a little rustic but there is plenty of energy contained in this entry wine from Gérard Perse. Just add a hearty steak and you'll be on your way.

The 2016 Esprit de Pavie is dark, succulent and inviting. Black cherry, plum, spice, licorice and chocolate are pushed forward. This is an especially ripe, fleshy vintage for the Esprit. Today, the oak is not fully integrated. It will be interesting to see what time brings. Esprit is made from the Perses’ numerous holdings in Saint-Émilion and the Côtes de Castillon.

(65 Merlot, 20 Cabernet Franc, 15 Cabernet Sauvignon) | 14.1% alc. | 15 months in one-year-old Pavie and Monbousquet barrels While oaky, there is some very juicy, perfumed fruit here which looks nicely balanced. The finish is very tart and dry, but this will soften. This is a civilised Esprit in need or three or four years to lose its tannic edge, but it will get there. 16+
