L'Esprit de Chevalier rouge - Pessac-Léognan 2020

The Domaine de Chevalier located in Léognan, the Capital town of the Graves Region has a long history. It appears on the famous map of Pierre de Belleyme in 1783. In 1983 the estate was purchased by the Bernard Family, N° 1 in France on the spirits market and a major negociant of premium Bordeaux wines. It has been run ever since by Olivier Bernard who perpetuates that spirit of balance and the constant drive for perfection which have been the hallmark of this outstanding wine.

Since 1986, the planting of young vines has meant that the DOMAINE DE CHEVALIER had to craft a second wine, in both white and red.
This blend of sauvignon and semillon is known as L’ESPRIT DE CHEVALIER.
L’ESPRIT… The Spirit is also a way of making a wine. The Bernard Family, by calling its second wine L’ESPRIT DE CHEVALIER, wanted above all for it to carry the hallmark of Chevalier and to reflect the « Spirit » of the estate, combining
powerfulness and complexity but also finesse and elegance in total respect of the “terroir”. The red L’ESPRIT DE CHEVALIER is aged for 14 months in oak barrels, one third of which are renewed each year.
It is an appealing wine, ready to be appreciated earlier than the main wine (3 to 5 years old).

Harvest
Hand-picked, into small crates.
Grapes are carefully sorted in the vineyard as well as before and after destemming.

Vinification
Four vat-rooms, (steel, stainless steel, concrete “tulip” and wooden vats.)

Ageing
14 months in barrels

Tasting
Very intense color, black in the middle.
Deep, ripe nose of red and black berries, spices and fresh peaty humus and heather.
Concentrated on the palate. Black fruits and superb tannins with a tight structure, developing fresh and liquorice flavors of pine forests.
The brightly fruity flesh coats these tannins well. Structured, dense wine, promising to keep well. Very good overall balance, in line with the great wine.

The 2020 L'Esprit de Chevalier has a tad too much wood influence on the nose, but there is sufficient fruit to absorb it. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, fleshy, lively and detailed, with a dash of white pepper toward the finish. This is another delicious, classically styled Pessac-Léognan. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

Fleshy and demonstrative, the 2020 L'Esprit de Chevalier bursts with aromas of sweet berries, plums and petals. Medium to full-bodied, rich and layered, with polished tannins and an expansive finish, it will drink well young.

Plump and direct, with a mix of red currant and plum notes laced with a touch of red licorice, all backed by a light twang of iron on the finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2027.

The 2020 L'Esprit De Chevalier is more restrained aromatically, yet has outstanding purity in its red and black fruits as well as notes of dried herbs, tobacco, chocolate, and damp earth. It's a medium-bodied, elegant, balanced, and certainly delicious second wine that will benefit from just a year or two of bottle age and shine for a decade.

Black cherries, smoke, roasted nuts, flowers and red fruits come to the front of the perfume. Forward, soft, silky and polished, with additional nuances of cocoa, spice and licorice that accompanies the sweet, ripe, red fruits on the palate, this is already quite nice and should be perfect for near term drinking while waiting for the Grand Vin to develop. Drink from 2023-2032.

Extremely modern with an open, essential sensory character alternating notes of mixed red and white flowers. There's more in the citrusy background giving vivacity and freshness. Medium bodied, biting tannins and a slim finish which explodes from the centre palate onwards. Simply wonderful. Better from 2024.

The 2020 Esprit de Chevalier has a very perfumed, floral bouquet with pressed iris and peony infusing the blackberry and blueberry fruit. Very controlled and classic in style. The palate is medium-bodied with quite concentrated black fruit laced with white pepper and a touch of Provençal herbs. Slight viscosity here, powerful with a generous finish, this is a superb Deuxième Vin that should give 12-15 years' drinking pleasure.

The 2020 L’Esprit de Chevalier, re-tasted at the property, showed better than in the UK. The nose here is very similar, but the palate is not as lean or timid, showing more depth and concentration, hence my higher score.

The 2020 L'Esprit de Chevalier is a fabulous second wine. Deep, vibrant and full of character, the 2020 pulses with energy. Sweet black cherry, plum, chocolate, new leather, licorice and spice infuse this succulent, wonderfully juicy Pessac-Léognan. Readers will have a hard time keeping their hands off this gem, and why should they?

The 2020 Esprit de Chevalier has a pretty nose with brambly black fruit, wild hedgerow and light iris flower scents. The palate is medium-bodied with a gritty opening, maybe a little lean on the entry with a granular texture, cedar and tobacco notes towards the finish where I would like to see more substance. One for early drinking.

Light and sappy with stone fruits, apricot and nectarine, there is an underlying sweetness that is hugely appealing. It really closes in through the palate and has a ton of grip with the touch of Pessac-Léognan elegance but can be rolled out and enjoyed straight away.

Smoke, tobacco leaf, herbs, spice and red currants are instantly recognizable on the nose. Medium-bodied, fresh and vibrant, with juicy, bright, red fruits, lift and elegance on the palate and in the finish. This is a nice baby Domaine de Chevalier. This is perfect for near term drinking while waiting for the Grand Vin to develop. 91-93

Tiefdunkles Rubingranat, violette Reflexe, zarter Ockerrand.
