Epu - Puento Alto 2023

EPU is a perfect introduction to the exclusive and harmonious world of Almaviva

Almaviva, two cultures, one great wine

In 1997, Baroness Philippine de Rothschild (1933-2014), Chairwoman of the Supervisory Board of Baron Philippe de Rothschild S.A, and Don Eduardo Guilisasti Tagle (1920-1998), Chairman of Viña Concha y Toro S.
A, sealed the birth of Almaviva, a profound alliance between two historic wine families: Baron Philippe de Rothschild, founded in 1853, and Viña Concha y Toro, founded in 1883.

Almaviva is the extraordinary result of this encounter between two worlds and two cultures. Chile offers the force of nature, expressed through a perfect terroir with passionate people, remarkable climate conditions and spectacular soils, whilst France contributes with its unique savoir-faire, long-lasting traditions, and pursuit of elegance.

The 2023 Vintage

The video of the vintage: https://youtu.be/ewTphwzOlc4

The winter was extremely dry, with only 119 mm of rainfall from June to September 2022 in Puente Alto. However, this level of winter rainfall was significantly higher than last year, when we had only 51 mm during the same period.

The period October-December was globally warmer than average. Spring was dry, with only 7 mm of rain between October and December. The summer was extremely hot, with temperatures higher than historical figures (average temperature 2°C above normal) and the hottest March ever in Chile. April and May were also warmer than usual. Given a ripening process fastened by the extremely high temperatures of the Summer, the grapes had to be picked early to maintain the fruit and the acidity.

2023 is a great vintage that maintains the fresh character of Puente Alto in this dry and hot vintage, a well-structured vintage with a great expression of Cabernet Sauvignon.

Tasting notes:

Brilliant ruby red colour. The nose is ample, complex and full of fruit. Aromas of cassis and red berries predominate first, to give place after agitation to elegant and subtle notes of vanilla, earth and fine herbs. In mouth, the harmonious blend displays a juicy attack, a luscious texture and a remarkable smoothness of tannins. The evolution leaves an impression of balance, roundness and voluptuous final. A pleasant, attractive and approachable wine, with persistent notes of liquorice and ripe strawberries throughout the long savoury finish.

Composed of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Carménère and 3% each Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the 2023 Epu derives from younger vines and deeper soils at the Almaviva estate and matured for 12 months in 10% new French oak. It opens with a classic bouquet of cigar wrapper, anise and spice notes set against a core of black and blue fruits. The palate is rich and seductive, concluding with a luscious, fruit-driven finish enhanced by herbal nuances that linger.

(Puente Alto, Maipo Valley; 82% Cabernet Sauvignon; 12% Carménère; 3% Merlot; 3% Cabernet Franc; 14.5% alcohol; a joint venture between Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Concha y Toro, this is Almaviva’s second wine). Impressive, as ever and aromatically very expressive. It’s actually the floral and Szechuan peppercorn notes from the Carménère that one hones in on first, accentuating the sense of lift whilst giving additional levity to the dark berry Cabernet fruit. There’s a hint of toasted sesame seed too that one picks up again in the mouth. I love the wild mountain herbal dimension to this. Soft on the entry but with quite grainy tannins that quickly punch their way through the softer edges of the attack bringing a vivid and vibrant sense of energy to the mid palate. This is quite tight-framed and that gives this more intensity in the mouth. One senses the heat and sunshine of the vintage. Quite spicy and piquant on the finish where one perhaps notices just a little the alcohol.

The 2023 Blend EPU comes from Maipo. Deep garnet in hue, it delivers ripe fruit aromas of blackberry, dried plum, a touch of cassis and violet. Rich and voluminous, with plush tannins and a hint of talc, the palate is juicy and enveloping. Its freshness balances the mature profile. 14.5% alcohol.

Red bell peppers on the nose - so clear - really unmistakeable and so pronounced. Shiny and glossy, still more pepper flavours on the palate with bright red cherries and some creamy milk chocolate too. Relatively compact still, but there’s finesse and lovely cooling freshness all the way through with a mint, aniseed finish. I don't get the alcohol here. Well balanced and presented. 3% Cabernet Franc completes the blend. Director Manuel Louzada, winemaker Michel Friou.

Vanilla, crème caramel, damson, red cherry, crushed strawberries, firm but silky tannins, plenty of lift and a sense of impact and confidence. Oak toasting evident. Joint venture Barons Philippe de Rothschild SA and Concha y Toro. Tasted twice.

This is a little fruitier and more vibrant than previous vintages, with sweet berries, cassis, fine herbs and roasted white sesame seeds on the nose. Fine tannins with sweet berries and a very smooth, refined finish. A medium-bodied, approachable, balanced Epu from a hot vintage. 10% new barrels. Already very approachable, but will age nicely in the next few years. Drink or hold.
