Ducru Beaucaillou - Saint-Julien 2007

After a harsh winter, vegetation started fairly early. May was rather chaotic and flowering 10 days or more per plot. In order to homogenize the harvest and to avoid vegetal deviations in the wine, we made rosé harvest at the time of the veraison (first half of August) by manually eliminating, foot by foot, the late clusters, green or pink. Then, in order to make up for the lack of heat and sunshine, we practiced, in an unusual way at home, a complete stripping at the level of the bunches during the second half of August, so that our vines were able to benefit from the return of the big sun at the end of August: three good weeks of an uninterrupted, dry and sunny north-eastern regime with fairly strong winds and moderate heat, ideal for the ripening of grapes and in particular that of Cabernets-Sauvignons.

Red-ruby. Nicely ripe aromas for the year: cassis, lead pencil, menthol, minerals and flowers. Then juicy, intense and sharply delineated, with lovely lift to the fla vors of dark berries, minerals and cedar. Silky-sweet wine with lovely aromatic persistence. And very intense for 2007.

An outstanding effort from proprietor Bruno Borie, the 2007 Ducru exhibits sweet black currant fruit, licorice, lead pencil shaving, and wood spice characteristics along with medium to full body, a velvety mouthfeel, and outstanding density as well as richness. It is a strong effort for the vintage, and should drink well for 15+ years.... Drink 2010-2025

Offers sliced plum on the nose, with flowers and some oak. Medium- bodied, with polished, refined tannins that caress the palate. Builds on the finish. Racy for the vintage. Best after 2014.

(90% cabernet sauvignon and 10% merlot) Deep red-ruby. Crushed cassis, blackberry, violet, licorice and bitter chocolate on the very fresh nose. Then dense but light on its feet, with lovely ripeness to the silky flavors of black fruits, clove and bitter chocolate. Attractively sweet on the back end, with fine-grained tannins and a suggestion of fig. This boasts an almost chocolatey ripeness and good minerality for the year and surprises with its firm structure.

Tiefdunkles Rubingranat, jugendliche Reflexe, violetter Rand.

A dark purple/garnet colour. Again, very pure on the nose, hints of rose petals, raspberry, red cherries – again very refined. This is an excellent Ducru – very fine tannins, very cohesive, not dissimilar to Las-Cases, certainly much more refined than in recent years. Svelte, silky smooth and very seductive. Nice grip on the finish. Good effort this year, a touch better than the 2006. Tasted April 2008.

Pretty dark, opulent crimson. Scented. Rather compact. Inky and savoury and there’s a recognisable relationship with the grand vin in other vintages. Good! Appetising – I think that’s the first time I have written that about the 07s. Quite interesting rather than super sweet. Fleshy. Good dust! Long and well balanced.

A solid wine, with plenty of rose petal, berry and currant character. Full and chewy. Ripe and very powerful. Wait and see, but impressive for the vintage. —J.S.
