Dragon de Quintus - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2021

Château Quintus, the new star of the right bank

In 2011, Domaine Clarence Dillon purchased a superb property in Saint-Émilion, now renamed Château Quintus. In 2013, Château Quintus made the acquisition of another neighbouring property, as well as a third one in 2021. These three exceptional properties now form a wine estate of 45 hectares producing one of Saint-Émilion’s finest wines. The Gallo-Romans, creators of the vineyards of Saint-Emilion, had the custom of naming their 5th child Quintus (fifth). So, Domaine Clarence Dillon has decided to pay homage to its glorious predecessors by renaming this growth Château Quintus.

Le Dragon de Quintus is the second wine of the estate. The name originates from the dragon statue that towers above the magical terroir of Saint-Emilion, perched high upon the promontory, where the estate is located.

The 2021 vintage

2021 highlighted even more the strength of Quintus’s terroir, with a rainy month of June during which the limestone promontory enabled the vine to be protected from weather risks and fungal diseases, thanks to its topography and natural drainage of the soils.
After a relatively cool month of July, when the grapes developed slowly, the month of September marked a distinct speed-up in ripening, with warm, sunny days that were really beneficial for maturity.

The expansion of the property, progressing to 45 hectares, of which 42 hectares under vine, made its mark upon these harvests, because this enlargement gives the winemaking teams an even richer palette for creating their blends. The potential of these new plots was confirmed from the 2021 vintage. Some of theses plots was included in the second wine's blend.

Tasting note

A lovely, moderately deep ruby colour. It is fruity and ripe on the nose, with aromas of pomegranate and flowers. Delicately woody, the first taste is soft and gentle. The wine develops on perceptible, tannins full of flavour, it is moderately full and long, but always with a very pleasant flavour of red fruit.

Le Dragon is a wine of pleasure.

Aromas of blueberries and sandalwood with hints of bark. Medium body, with fine tannins and salty clove undertones. Bright and vivid with a crunchy finish. 82.7% merlot, 14.5% cabernet franc and 2.8% malbec. Better in two or three years but already fresh and energetic.

The 2021 Le Dragon de Quintus has much more to offer than the Troisième Vin, with baking spices and Provençal herbs infusing the open red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, a light-framed but fresh Saint-Émilion, delivering a dab of b

A fresh, fruity bouquet of dark wild berries, raspberries and cherries preface the 2022 Dragon de Quintus, a round, juicy and elegant wine that possesses a saline, calcareous and penetrating finish. It can be drunk any time over the next decade. It's a blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc.

The 2021 Le Dragon de Quintus is sourced from a collection of mid-slope parcels across the château's three main clusters of vineyards. It offers lovely depth and energy throughout. Dark-fleshed fruit, spice, leather and menthol are all laced together. This succulent, stylish Saint-Émilion is all charm.

Matured in 20% new oak, the 2021 Dragon de Quintus delivers aromas of sweet berries, cassis, warm spices, raw cocoa and loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, lively and succulent, with a pretty core of fruit, powdery tannins and a sapid finish, it shows promise. This derives from Quintus's holdings at the foot of the slope.

Clarity on the nose, summer red berries with bramble touches, nicely aromatic. Succulent and juicy, this is lightly framed with quite a direct flavour - the slightly sour, slightly bitter notes coming through with high acidity giving the strawberry and red cherry flavours a high tone alongside eucalyptus and cool mint as well as soft cinnamon and clove. Super long finish with a nice balance overall. An easy-drinking wine but still with nuance and complexity in terms of the flavour details. Needs time to round out and become more expansive. Right now quite linear and driven on the palate.
