Dr. Loosen - Kabinett Bergweiler Prüm Erben, Wehlener Sonnenuhr - Mosel 2019

Weingut Zach. Bergweiler-Prüm Erben is Mosel winemaker Ernst Loosen’s exploration of the historical winemaking traditions of his family.

This singular project pays tribute to Ernst’s maternal great-grandfather, who was a major Mosel wine producer at the turn of the 20th century. Born in 1861, Zacharias Bergweiler built a substantial wine estate in the village of Wehlen and subsequently married into the other highly successful wine family of the village: the Prüm family. The wines are grown and produced according to the extremely patient and low-intervention practices used in the time of Zacharias, when German Rieslings enjoyed their greatest reputation around the world.

The 2019 vintage:

The 2019 Mosel Riesling vintage faced another year of extreme weather, marked especially by a severe August heat wave and prolonged drought conditions. Despite the challenges, Riesling’s resilience shone through, producing a lower-yielding but fully ripe crop with vibrant aromatics and pronounced acidity.

Scattered rains and cooler September temperatures helped the fruit ripen well, although late-September rains caused botrytis, requiring fast, selective harvesting. In the cellar, the wines show ripe density similar to 2018, but with brighter acidity for better structure. The result is a vintage with exuberant fruit, excellent balance, and strong aging potential.

Very cool and delicate, also extremely youthful for six years old. The raciness and stony brilliance on the light- to medium-bodied palate are spectacular. The long maturation on the lees and the bottle maturation after that has created wonderfully elegant, dry harmony. Drink from release.

(9.5% alcohol; 1348 bottles). The only tragedy here is the tiny number of bottles. Wow! An electrically brilliant wine. So bright and crisp and fresh and pixilated in its seemingly perfect capturing of pure fruit. Creamier, richer and fuller than the ‘Dry GG’ but with even more natural acidity to compensate. Peach kernel. Tarte au citron. Lemon meringue pie. As tense as a high wire trapeze artist in a tornado.

Dried herbs and lemon rind, some bitter touches on the nose. This is immediately so satisfying on the palate, rich and honeyed, thick and sugary but not heavy at all. It’s like a burst of sherbet before the glorious fresh, ripe fruit comes flooding in, like a fruit salad compote - a mix of white and green fruit all mingling together. So juicy and alive, structured and so intense yet perfectly balanced and harmoniously presented. Complex but not overdone. You don't necessarily want to sit and think about this wine, just drink it down and enjoy. A wine that just makes you smile. Electric and absolutely glorious. If I could buy just one wine from the releases it would be this for the sheer enjoyment factor! Around 28.5g of residual sugar, 1,331 bottles made. The second vintage for three wines in this range on the Place de Bordeaux that is an homage to the historical winemaking traditions of Ernst Loosen's family.

The 2019 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett is fresh and reductive on the attractively clear and aromatic nose with white stone fruit aromas. On the palate, this is a sharp, precise and juicy Sonnenuhr with remarkable finesse and crunchy slate aromas. Lingering salinity and piquancy. Tasted at the domain in September 2020.
