Tasted at the Domaine de Chevalier vertical in London. Deep garnet core with thin tawny/mahogany rim. The nose is vivacious, great lift and definition with blackberry leaf, red cherry, touch of leather, cedar and mint. The palate is medium-bodied, very well balanced and has the elegance and femininity of the 2000. Red cherries, redcurrants and a touch of leather, good nervosité on the finish even if it lacks a little grip and persistency. There is a nice tang of orange zest inflecting the aftertaste. Excellent. Drink now-2018 Tasted May 2008.

A smooth, sculpted giant. Dark-ruby color. Wonderful aromas of fruit, roasted meat and fresh mushrooms. Full-bodied and very thick, with soft, velvety tannins and a long, long finish of sweet, ripe fruit. Beautiful now, but wait.--1989 Bordeaux horizontal. Best after 2005.

The dark ruby-colored 1989 is a plump, forward style of Domaine de Chevalier. The wine displays smoky toasty oak that is better integrated than in more recent vintages. A smoky, herb-tinged, sweet cherry and black currant-scented nose is followed by a medium-bodied wine with low acidity, ripe, fleshy fruit, moderate tannin, and a nice finish. The 1989 is less evolved than the 1990. Anticipated maturity: 1999-2010. Last tasted 10/97

The 1989 is a densely concentrated, tannic, medium-bodied, rich, and stylish wine, but the new oak continues to dominate its bouquet and give it a hard, woody finish.
