Dauphine (la) - Fronsac 2021

La Dauphine, a royal history

In the 18th century, the vineyards of Fronsac were among the noblest in the Bordeaux region and its wines were among the most famous one in the Libourne region. In the middle of the 18th century, shortly after the construction of the château, Marie-Josèphe DE SAXE, the Dauphine of France and mother of the last kings of France, stayed there for a few days. Thanks to this event, the estate became famous and was named "Château La Dauphine" in memory of the stay of this princess.
Several families succeeded each other at the head of the estate, but since 2015, it is the Labrune family that presides over the destiny of La Dauphine.

La Dauphine, an estate focused on the future

Assisted by Stéphanie Barousse since 2016, the Labrune family is implementing an ambitious strategy: to produce great organic and biodynamic wines that express the finesse of their terroir.

The vineyard has gradually expanded in recent years to reach 66 hectares today. Facing south, it is distinguished by its amphitheater shape with a 60m difference in level between the highest and lowest plots. The soil is rich and generous, offering the vines no less than 14 different types of soil.

"The details make the quality and the quality is not a detail", this is the leitmotiv of the teams. Since her arrival, Stéphanie Barousse has questioned the methods of production and vinification in order to bring more precision and finesse in the wines. Thanks to her dynamism and her vision, the wines have experienced a significant qualitative progression over the last vintages. 2021 is a perfect continuation of this valuable work.

The 2021 vintage

This vintage really put Bordeaux's winegrowers to the test, requiring equal measures of patience and determination!
After several periods of challenging weather, the luck turned and the future vintage benefited from favourable conditions. The 2021 vintage allowed the vines to flourish, confirming the desire to give more and more pride of place to the Cabernet Franc, which makes up 20% of the blend.

La Dauphine's teams proudly present a vintage that echoes the era that made
Bordeaux famous, with fresh, balanced, structured wines that will reveal their complexity in the weeks to come.

The 2021 La Dauphine is a real success. Deep, fleshy and super-expressive, the 2021 has a lot to offer. Succulent dark cherry, plum, mocha, licorice, dried herbs and incense are nicely amplified in this mid-weight yet flavorful Fronsac. What a delight.

This shows focus and linear tension for the appellation. Blackberry, blueberry and wet-earth character. Medium body, fine tannins and a fresh finish.

A blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, the 2021 Château De La Dauphine has outstanding potential, sporting a deep purple hue as well as both ripe currant and darker cherry fruits, some smoky tobacco and chocolate notes, medium body, beautiful mid-palate depth, and a great finish.

The less-than-optimal weather in 2021 casts a limited impact on La Dauphine. Whether it is the ripe aromas of berry fruits, the creamy body, or the delicate hawthorn and jujube features, all leave me the impression of a good vintage. The chalky texture, which is no stranger at all, spreads across the taste buds, adding layers of complexity while elongating the characters of the body ingeniously. I am confident that the high acidity will help the wine maintain its elegance after years of aging. Highly recommended. 2021????????????La Dauphine?????????????????????????,??????????????????????La Dauphine?????????????,???????????????????????????????,???????????????????????????

With deep color, once past the freshly picked floral aromas, you find that the fruits are on the dark red side of the style range, with round textures and a soft, polished, sweet, lively, black raspberry and energetic plum finish. Drink from 2023-2034. 90-92

The 2021 Château de La Dauphine has an energetic bouquet of perfumed black cherries, cassis fruit and light violet aromas; there’s good presence here. The palate is quite structured, delivering insistent grip, impressive salinity and a very harmonious finish. It might just lack a bit of persistence, but otherwise this is a very fine Fronsac.

A strong performance, the 2021 de la Dauphine impressed me on each of the three occasions I tasted it. Exhibiting aromas of cherries, berries, pencil shavings and loamy soil, it's medium to full-bodied, supple and charming, with a pretty core of fruit, soft tannins and a demonstrative, fruit-driven personality.
