Dauphine (la) (BIO-ORGANIC) - Fronsac 2023

La Dauphine, a cru driven by the future

The name "Château La Dauphine" is a tribute to Marie-Joséphine de Saxe, Dauphine de France, who stayed a few days at the estate in the 18th century. Several families succeeded each other at the head of the estate until the Labrune familiy aquired it in 2015. Assisted by Stéphanie Barousse since 2016, they are implementing an ambitious strategy: to produce great organic and biodynamic wines that express the finesse of their terroir.

The vineyard has gradually expanded in recent years to reach 66 hectares in the Fronsac appellation. Facing south, it is distinguished by its amphitheater shape with a 60m difference in level between the highest and lowest plots. The soil is rich and generous, offering the vines no less than 14 different types of soil.

"The details make the quality and the quality is not a detail", this is the leitmotiv of the teams. Since her arrival, Stéphanie Barousse has questioned the methods of production and vinification in order to bring more precision and finesse in the wines. Thanks to her dynamism and her vision, the wines have experienced a significant qualitative progression over the last vintages. 2021 is a perfect continuation of this valuable work.

The 2023 Château de La Dauphine has a refined and focused bouquet with blackberry, briar and light tobacco scents. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, fine acidity, fresh blackberry and wild strawberry fruit laced with cedar and, again, tobacco toward the finish. Delightful.

Graphite and blackberries with a subtle herbal undertone reminiscent of thyme. The palate is medium- to full-bodied, with firm tannins and a refined thread of dark fruit running through the finish. A blend of 80% merlot and 20% cabernet franc. Drink now.

The 2023 Château La Dauphine is terrific, with ripe red, blue, and black fruits as well as some obvious minerality and graphite notes. This rich, medium to full-bodied, round, wonderfully polished Fronsac will have 10-12 years of prime drinking, if not longer. This is a terrific estate in Fronsac that deserves to be on every reader's radar.

This is a hidden gem. If you want an outstanding wine that sells for song, with aromatics, intensity, finesse, and charm, along with a boatload of ripe, red fruits, creamy-textures, and a fruit-filled finish, this is for you. La Dauphine is now one of the top wines from Fronsac. Drink from 2027-2040. 93-95 Pts.

Medium plus intensity, gorgeous deep plum colour, raspberry leaf, rosebud, sinewy tannins, a little bit subdued, but clear quality, great tannic juice, an estate to bookmark for sure.

The 2023 La Dauphine is a powerful, resonant wine. Blackberry jam, spice, licorice, chocolate and lavender are some of the many notes that come alive in this succulent, opulent Fronsac. Pretty top notes from the 20% Cabernet Franc add nuance. This is beautifully rendered. Tasted two times.

The 2023 Château de La Dauphine has a well-defined bouquet with blackberry, wild strawberry, cedar and light floral scents—one of the classiest that you will find from Fronsac this year. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, fine depth and gentle grip. There is a sense of poise to this Fronsac that I really admire, and it feels persistent on the finish. This is an excellent de La Dauphine that should aged well in bottle.

Dark ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, brightening at the rim. Ripe cherries, notes of figs, a hint of nougat. Medium complexity, delicately leafy texture, vivid tan- nins, mineral and salty finish, though somewhat dry.

Juicy and fresh red with medium body and firm tannins. Hints of vivid fruit and wet stones in the finish. Slightly chewy at the end.
