Dalla Valle, Maya - Napa Valley 2019

Dalla Valle Vineyards is recognized as one of Napa Valley’s preeminent family-run wineries. Founded in 1986 by Naoko and her late husband Gustav Dalla Valle, on the famed eastern hillsides of Oakville, Dalla Valle Vineyards has earned acclaim as one of world’s most celebrated wine estates, yielding wines of extraordinary character and complexity, vintage after vintage.

Today, Dalla Valle is guided by the mother-and-daughter team of Naoko and Maya Dalla Valle, who work alongside an illustrious team that includes Consulting Winemaker Andy Erickson, Vineyard Manager Edgar Alfaro, as well as Consulting Enologist Michel Rolland. With a shared mission that Dalla Valle thrive for generations to come, this dedicated group stewards every aspect of the viticulture and winemaking with a level of meticulous care and detail reserved for the great First Growths.

2019 vintage

The 2019s standout as another classic, idyllic Napa Valley vintage to remember. A milestone into our history at Dalla Valle was made in 2019 as we dove into the world of Biodynamic farming. Our deep love and connection to this land inspired us to begin this journey. The elements of energy and vibrancy show in the 2019 vintage. A cool winter and mild rainy spring replenished our vines and provided them with the energy to sustain the heat of summer and perfectly ripen in the fall.

Tasting notes

Ever the philosophical wine, with every sip the 2019 Maya reveals new layers of complexity and depth, invoking thoughts of a mysterious and intriguing destination. The firmness of the Maya’s Cabernet is boosted and lifted by the black olive and dried herbal tones of the Cabernet Franc. Boysenberry, crushed gravel, and violet come to the forefront before revealing deeper layers of black and blue fruits, lingering through an extended finish but at the same maintains an ethereal status that dances on the palate.

Smells gorgeous, heady and seductive. Smooth and sensual, this is a bold wine, concentrated and intense, full of silky but grippy tannins, liquorice and herbal spice with dark chocolate covered blackcurrants all delivered so well. Such pristine quality to this with detail and nuance. It's heady and rich and at 15% you can feel the alcohol but there is definition and direction here. It's unashamedly confident and wows on the palate.

A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Cabernet Franc, the 2019 Maya comes bounding out of the glass with exuberant scents of wild blueberries, Morello cherries, boysenberry preserves, and chocolate box, followed by hints of star anise, cardamom, and dusty red soil. Full-bodied, concentrated, and powerful, the tannins are firm yet velvety, while a remarkable burst of freshness lifts the decadent fruit. It finishes with an epically long mineral firework display.
Dalla Valle’s Maya comes from a dedicated section of the estate vineyard, located in the valley’s eastern foothills, below Pritchard Hill, and above the Oakville benchlands, overlooking Screaming Eagle and Rudd vineyard.

Silky concentrated, liqourice, savoury tannins, slate, softened structure at this point but still powerful. This is excellent. Andy Erikson winemaker at this 8.5ha estate.

The clarity of fruit is so impressive with blackberry and blueberry aromas and so many violets. It’s full-bodied, yet tight and reserved, with very polished, strong tannins that are long and well-formed. There’s freshness and brightness, though. A cool and toned young red. Try after 2025.

The 2019 Maya is fabulous. I can't remember a young Maya with this much sheer immediacy and allure at this stage. The purity of the flavors is just remarkable. Bright red/purplish fruit, spice, blood orange, mocha and mint are some of notes that open over time. There is plenty of tannin, but it is nearly buried by the sheer intensity of the fruit. I would not be in any rush to open a bottle soon. In 2019, Maya is more finesse than power.

As fans know, Maya comes from a very special section of the estate vineyard, situated in the valley's eastern foothills, below Pritchard Hill and in the above the Oakville floor, overlooking Screaming Eagle. The blend is two-thirds Cabernet Sauvignon and one-third Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2019 Maya slowly unfurls to reveal a firework display of redcurrant preserves, kirsch, boysenberries and wild blueberries, followed by iron ore, red roses, cardamom, fallen leaves and crushed rocks, with a waft of pencil shavings. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is stunningly graceful and refined, featuring exhilarating mineral sparks among the red and black fruits, finishing with so much brightness and energy. Breathtaking!

One of the finest wines in the vintage is the 2019 Maya Proprietary Red Wine, and red wine doesn’t get any better. The usual blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Cabernet Franc, its deep purple hue is followed by an incredible bouquet of blackcurrants, tobacco, dark chocolate, and crushed stone, which turns more floral, pretty, and complex with time in the glass. Full-bodied on the palate, it marries a rare sense of elegance and finesse with incredible intensity. It’s impossible to resist today yet merits at least 5-7 years of bottle age, and I have no doubt this beauty will still be enjoyable at age 50. Bravo!
